Feels like he's trying so hard to convince us. Footballers lie a lot. His defence lawyers must have told him to keep up with this line of argument. He probably became Man United captain a bit too early.

(I know he said plain-clothed but I watched the video of the fight and 1 of the officers was in uniform)

They were in plain clothes and did not identify themselves.

Police in many of those southern European nations are very crooked. This doesn't surprise me at all.
