...As YWC passes vote of confidence on Akintoys's leadership

Two leading Yoruba socio-cultural groups are currently at loggerheads over the alleged secession agenda being championed by one of the groups for the South West of Nigeria to break away from Nigeria and become an independent nation.

The two groups are Yoruba World Congress (YWC), which is an umbrella body over more than 150 pan-Yoruba self-determination organisations, under the leadership of its President-General, Prof Banji Akintoye, as well as the Yoruba Appraisal Forum (YAF), under the leadership of Adeshina Animashaun.

The YWC addressed a press conference at its headquarters, Bodija, Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, on Tuesday and re-established a vote of absolute confidence in the leadership of Akintoye. Also, the YAF, staged a peaceful protest march to the Oyo State Governor’s Office, Agodi, Ibadan on the same Tuesday against alleged secession agenda of YWC.

The YAF also presented a protest letter to the Governor Seyi Makinde, through his Executive Assistant on Security, Mr. Sunday Odukoya, who said: “We have received your letter. We shall deliver your message to the governor. Now that you have expressed your reservations, we assure you that we shall address the matter.”

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions, inluding: ‘What we need is development, not secession.’ Together we stand, divided we fall.’ ‘Together we stand and love one another.’ ‘Believe in one Nigeria.’ ‘In one Nigeria we stand.’ ‘We are for unity, don’t beat the drum of war.’

But addressing journalists on behalf of YWC, Dr. Tunde Hamzat, dismissed the news making the round that Akintoye was no longer the leader of the Yoruba nation, saying: “The Yoruba World Congress is one and indivisible under the leadership of Emeritus Prof Banji Akintoye. There is no crisis within the YWC. We are not in contention with anyone or group. This is a family issue which is being resolved within the clan.

“We remain unequivocally committed to the ideals of the Yoruba World Congress (YWC) as eloquently expressed by Prof. Banji Akintoye, which are to liberate the Yoruba race from the oppression and persecution which Nigeria represents, to establish a better, more promising future for our teeming youths and to ensure the peaceful achievement of the self-determination goals of the Yoruba nation.

“This is a gathering of all the groups which elected Prof. Banji Akintoye as Yoruba leader a year ago. They are the various groups which came together to form the Yoruba World Congress. These groups are gathered here in Ibadan, one year after that momentous event, to re-establish a vote of absolute confidence in the leadership of Prof. Banji Akintoye.”

Hamzat, who said the brains behind YAF are four members of YWC that were suspended based on certain issues, also noted that Akintoye emerged leader of Yoruba nation on August 22, 2019, and within one year, more than 100 Yoruba, both in Nigeria and in the diaspora, have been admitted into the YWC, saying “our admission into the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) within a year of our existence, is novel and commendable. The Oodua Nation project is on course. We appreciate the efforts of Prof. Banji Akintoye and other leaders in this respect. The protection of lives and properties of the Yoruba and other ethnic nationalities domiciled in the Southt West geo political zone is of paramount importance to YWC leadership.

“We commend the courage exhibited by our governors in the establishment of Amotekun even in the midst of hostility and intimidation by the powers that be. The Water Bill at the National Assembly represents a background manoeuvre to bring back RUGA and further appropriate more of the resources of Yorubaland. It therefore stands totally rejected by the YWC. In equal effect, the CAMA bill cannot stand because it puts the control of one religious group under another. It represents the ruthless deployment of power by the Muslim North to further continue the Islamisation and Fulanisation of Nigeria.”

However, the protest letter, entitled: ‘Please, Save Yorubaland from Imminent Doom!’ signed by Adeshina Animashaun, addressed to Governor Makinde, read in part: “Your Excellency, a motley of crowd of discontents, zealots have lately increased the tempo of their unpatriotic activities masquerading as championing the cause of the Yoruba people of the South-West. Their activities, at best, qualify for nothing good.

“The Yoruba Appraisal Forum is by this statement giving a notice that we, as responsible Yoruba, will not fold our arms and watch a few disgruntled and self-serving individuals to turn our land into a wartorn zone like Somalia and Sudan. If it ever becomes imperative for Yorubaland to break away from the rest of Nigeria, it should be a collective decision of all Yoruba people within Nigeria and in the Diaspora. The recent activities of the Yoruba World Congress and its cohots underscore the need for government and security agencies to be more informed about the decisive tendencies of these groups.”

I think we need to settle this matter between YWC and YAF.

They should organize a debate and tell us why they think the Yorubas should follow their ideologies.

YWC are soliciting for the self-determination goals of the Yoruba nation and they already made sure they got admitted into the Unrepresented Nations and Peoples Organisation (UNPO) within a year of their existence. Such a nice feat and they are being led by a well known credible Emeritus Professor of history Banji Akintoye.

YAF on the other hand led by Adesina Animashaun want the status quo to continue. They said Nigeria should be an indivisible entity.

Nice one that there is contrasting views, so one side should try to win over people from the other side and those still sitting on the fence with superior argument as to why the Yorubas should lean towards each of them.

Life is not about gragra or threats, sometimes you need to carry everybody along and win their heart naturally before they can give their all to things of critical importance.

As for me, I lean towards YWC school of thought.

There is an old wise saying that goes this way "people criticize you when you do something they want but don't have the guts to attempt it" and this post is a perfect illustration of it. The yorubas want to secede from Nigeria but doesn't have the guts to go for it that's why they criticize Igbos for daring to do that they long for but aren't man enough to try

Tinubu said he doesn't believe in Nigeria before 1999, but when he became governor and eventually a godfather, he became a believer in Nigeria. Maybe, now he has discovered that the gambaris have used him and are about to dump him, he no longer believes in Nigeria.

The afonjas believe in Nigeria is conditional but unfortunately for them, they don't have the mind to challenge the status quo.

There are many reasons Afonjas are afraid of seperation. But the two major reasons are The threat of war. They are so scared by the mention of civil war they probably might piss in their pants e.g Oladipo Diya and Rasaki. grin another reason is that they cannot stay alone. The fear of the unknown. It scares them to hell staying alone or probably with the Fulanis their brothers who wouldn't allow them use the ports in Apapa in peace. It reminds them of Kwara state. grin grin grin grin grin . I wonder why they are cowardly when they hear division. After all, the war was fought in Igbo land. They are the ones with battle scars. Afonja can fear. grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

They can never disappoint.

The true image of the Yoruba citizens

They're very confused and never love themselves right from the beginning. If not for the British, they would have finished themselves in the kiriji wrestling fights while the fulanis cleaning up what is left.

Their Muslims are always willing to obey the North even at the expense of their people. Muric is a typical example.

Ordinary group that was formed last year now has an opposition by themselves shocked

Now compare that with Biafran agitators that are uncountable yet there does not exist a single opposition except by our politicians. We have one voice in our believe that Nigeria is not working despite our Republican nature.

I really pity them, because the worst thing that can happen to any zone in the emerging chaos is to be confused and not knowing what you want.

Yugoslavia is a good example.

Why do we always blame Tinubu for everything? This is getting stale.

We Yorubas are always great thinkers and people with intelligent minds. It hurt some of you guys are now starting to be under some form of Tinubu Derangement Syndrome.

How does this topic relate to Tinubu nao? How does religious extremism come into this in the first place? Can you read what you type? How does it relate to the issue of discourse?

Adeshina Animashaun of YAF is a Christian, while Tunde Hamzat that spoke on behalf of YWC is a Muslim. So what is the sense in bringing religious connotation to this?

Why do you carefully dodge the Amotekun part? Amotekun is A YORUBA security outfit that unites the SW
They have to drag Tinubu who claim to be Asiwaju...to endorse it, till today...He did not allow his puppet to sign it into law

If you don't know
Amotekun headquarter is Oyo state. Which is shameful to the so called asiwaju in Lagos
Seyi Makinde make it happen
Fayemi And the most respected Arakunrin Omoluabi THE TRUE ASIWAJU Oluwarotimi Akeredolu SAN...who is leading the ijajangbara awa omo yoruba
Tinubu is scared of the Unity that Seyi makinde will bring to unite the Yoruba independence since he succeeded with Amotekun...that's why he is fueling breakup of a faction from IYC
I will post gani Adams detailed interview that exposed Tinubu behind moves...ko le werk..

I don't even know what to reply coz your words are too disjointed to answer to.

Firsly, Amotekun is an agenda birthed under DAWN and it was pioneered by APC South West. It has already been signed into law by all the states in the SW and I don't know where your earlier claim of Sanwo-olu not signing it into law in the first place.

https://fmic.gov.ng/lagos-state-assembly-passed-the-bill-to-create-amotekun-corp/
https://www.nairaland.com/5717100/lagos-assembly-passes-amotekun-law

Secondly, because Tinubu did not come to the media to start threatening the federal government and shouting death to Fulani does not mean that he is not in support of Amotekun. His party brought it into limelight strategically and Makinde joined them because it is in the Yoruba interest and we are all one.

What more do you want? Tinubu should constantly come out and call for the head of all Fulanis or he should tattoo Amotekun on his forehead before you can know he is not opposed to it?

It is evident you don't even know basic things about your people. So according to the bolded, Makinde was the one that made Amotekun happen and Tinubu is scared of Makinde?
