In Nigeria, woe betide any driver whose vehicle goes out of control and kills a pedestrian due to brake or steering failure, for in many cities of the country, that driver will be chased down and murdered by a spontaneously formed lynch mob that will NOT stop to hear any excuses or explanations about the accident.   This scenario has played out times without number all over Nigeria, with sufficient regularity to no longer make headlines as did the one-off Austin,Texas incident mentioned above.
