The practice is bad, but the worse is bringing it up to the whole African continent, so that our tribe will be insulted.

This is something we Anambra, Imo, Ebony, Enugu and Abia people should stop on our own. We shouldn't bring up this matter shamelessly; there are people who are waiting for this to attack us.

If we are ashamed of the world knowing we still practice class discrimination in igbo land, then that will propel us to end it fast so that the world won't see us in such light.

Seriously, ibo people need to stop this nonsense and archaic practise immediately. If they can be treating their own fellow ibos like this, then what hope is there for a complete non-ibo stranger in their midst?

Those ibos being discriminated against had better leave such backward society and go elsewhere, else they will hardly progress. Could this senseless discrimination be the reason why their society is still the most homogeneous and seen as the most hostile towards strangers in Southern Nigeria? One hardly hears of strangers progressing in iboland the way ibos are allowed to in other societies.

All you Ibo people still practicing this nonsense should stop it. It's not fair!!! angry angry Tufiakwa.

No wonder they r extremely tribalistic..

When Igbo hate Igbo, then who will dey express hand of friendship to...

All this old fallacious believe must stop.

All tribes in Nigeria, not just igbos need to hold meetings to discard traditions that are useless in modern day Nigeria.

Ibos can't relate with what black Americans are going through with respect to police brutality because they share Donald Trump's racist ideology (they are Donald Trumps biggest sympathisers outside America's redneck belt). Now one can understand why that is so. It's because many of them grew up being taught to look down on their fellow ibos as Osu sub-humans. Smh.

Generalizing is a symptom of inbred senility

Being a descendent of slaves this hits home.
This is crazy but is the reason I don't generalize Nigerians anymore.
.
I use to view all Nigerians the same when I was younger.

I was militant and believed ALL Africans sold my people as slaves. I became more Pan African around college and learned the differences between tribes in Africa.

I purposely chose not to visit Ghana when I came to Africa. I felt slavery is too much apart of their economy.
They can't fool me with the "Year of Return" bullshit

I think sometimes us as black people will forever be screwed up. No matter where ever you go we treat our own the worst. It's sad when you think about it

I got love for every black man in the struggle. Nationalism , tribalism and classism will forever keep us at the bottom

When are going to talk about the dehumanization of women in the North ( women are properties in the North)?
When are we going to talk about the forced hijab and barqa dressing on women in the North?
When are we going to talk about allowing women to inherit land and including them in communal laws in the North?
When are we going to talk about the harassment of women wearing normal clothes by hisbah in the North?
When are we going to talk about segregating women in tiny room in the mosque?
When are we going to also talk about the segregation of Hausa bakwai and Hausa Banza (which is like the osu caste)?
When are we going to talk about not allowing an hausa man to be emir in his own land in Northern Nigeria?
When are we going to talk about forcefully prosecuting a Northerner in Sharia courts?
When are we going to talk about not allowing female yoruba monarchs to marry and give birth like queen Elizabeth?
When are we going to talk about the use of bobaku by yoruba Obas?
When are we going to talk about the use of human parts as traditional items in the West?
When are we going to talk about not allowing women own ancestral lands in the West ( not acquired lands)?
When are we going to talk about denying women their right to be emirs in the North?
When are we going to talk about denying women their rights to be Ooni of Ife and Alaafin of oyo?
When are we going to talk about not allowing women to be the Oba of Bini?
This is just to list a few.
But here we are, where everybody thinks the Igbo culture should be changed to accommodate western views while theirs should not be touched.
I only support changing customs that abuse human rights. But trying to demonize a tribe based on some side of their culture which seems weird to you is what I am against.
All African and the world's customs have bad sides, we should all work to mend those sides.

Don't u know that matters of the Igbo gives them undiluted metaplastic orgasm?

Does it not mean most Igbos are slaves, because this is something they are doing to themselves.

Why did they not just disown their respective family and move to the South West Of Nigeria to live freely and in peace?

Its what millions of Igbos have had to do to escape the clannish, discriminatory and intolerantly backward region they come from.

Imagine, in this day and age, a female eldest child is forbidden from inheriting the estate of her father in ala Igbo? Yet Igbos are in everyone business instead of looking to tackle the retrogressive and backward ways that is the norm in their backyard.
Which of the south west do people live freely? the skull mining and ritual capital of the world?

someone is even using Hausa bakwai and banza to justify this madness as if they're better than the hausas ,when it comes to accommodating non-northerns not to talk of those who are their own brother

have enough money like that of Dangote and even you are an OSU, watch how tradition disappears . When money is involved, even an OSU will look like a crown prince or most desirable princesss. When money is involved, you become automatic desirable, amnesia is very strong. Infact they that know you are an OSU will amnesia and even deny that you are one on your behalf even one when success speaks . My prayers to for the OSU, God create you and pray to be very successful in your business like the Jewish people. If marriage is refused because one is OSU, then marry amongst yourselves.

Not every Igbo clan practice Osu/Ohu system, why then the hasty generalization?
What's the aim of this thread?

For example, the Ngwas and the Aros don't practice Osu system. Likewise the Asa and Ndokis. That's like 4/5 of Abia state where this Osu thing is not in practice. Osu is not practiced in almost all parts of Ebonyi state.

The Osu thing is also very poorly understood by modern Igbos let alone outsiders .

Lastly, a lot of work is being done to eliminate the Osu/Ohu thing in parts of Igboland where they are being practiced by Ndiigbo, especially Imo state and Nsukka area of Enugu state and we don't need Nigerians help. We would appreciate it if Nigerians would focus more on their own societal ills and leave Ndiigbo alone to sort out ours in peace.

How does one identify an osu ? are there physical distinguishing features ? like can i be an osu but pretend that i am not ? like for example during the american slavery there were many light skin almost white black americans who pretended to be white and actually passed as white and people thought they were white so they escaped injustice that way. so as an osu can you pretend to be not an osu or are there distinguishing features to where you cant escape being recognised as an osu ? thanks in advance

True talk.
Our ancestors knew the stigma associated with slavery, that is why they rather die than allow themselves to be white slaves. E.g the Igbo landing in Virginia where they all commited suicide.
An Igbo man will rather die than allow himself to be enslaved because they believe that once you are enslaved, your soul and generation become enslaved. The same spirit is what you see in IPOB members, they see Nigeria as a slave camp so they rather die than be part of it
.

You're right. Like Igbos being slaves to Hausa Fulani and voting for them always? Like IPOB degenerates bowing before scoundrel Kanu by kissing his feet? Yeah, makes sense.

Everybody likes to quench the smoke in another person's house while their village is on fire.
It's like the new thread in Nigeria is attacking Igbo customs and traditions while a young man is about to be hanged for ordinary religion and women can't be allowed to dress the way they like in North by Hisbah all because of religion.
Whereas in South West, the supposed female yoruba monarch that to them symbolizes their equality in gender is not allowed to be with a man talkless of marrying and giving birth.
Everybody in Nigeria is now a Nelson Mandela on Igbo Culture

Osu IPOB nitwit, Adaobi Tricia Nwaubani who wrote the article about your backwards, barbaric, inhumane, primitive, uncivilized Osu tradition is your fellow Igbo, why not take it up with her rather than talking about other ethnic groups?
