Thousands of furious motorists are facing 10-hour delays and nine-mile queues after police caused traffic mayhem by conducting spot checks in a major security operation at the Port of Dover - but still refuse to reveal why. Locals residents have complained of traffic chaos and wailing police sirens as lorries cut through small villages to escape the traffic chaos, with motorists reporting nine-mile queues and 10-hour delays.

After their sweeping checks began to cause a backlog of traffic, police implemented Operation Stack - used to inhibit the flow of traffic to the Channel Tunnel and the Port - at 11am. It was stood down just an hour later, but queues are expected to take hours to clear.

Kent Police have refused to say why they were conducting spot checks, though a spokesman called the operation 'sensitive' and confirmed it was unrelated to a road accident which occurred yesterday.

The force spokesman added: 'A policing operation involving vehicle and passenger checks at Kent ports has been stood down. Border control checks are now returning to normality.'

'The policing operation has now been stood down and border control checks are returning to normality.'

There is stationary traffic on the A2 Jubilee Way coastbound at A20 (Eastern Docks roundabout) and congestion to the Shepherdswell turn off, which is nine miles away. Traffic is also very slow along the A256 from Whitfield heading into Dover as motorists try to avoid problems elsewhere.

Why I'm I thinking the traffic is related to a drug crime
Maybe they're trying to intercept a shipment or trying to prevent smuggling of a wanted criminal.

The port of Dover is the closest channel port linking the UK and France/EU. There's the port of Calais on the French side.

This is one of the immediate "benefits" of BREXIT. These ports have the highest passenger traffic between them. So any delays due to customs checks will cause gridlocks as you can see in these pictures.

The UK keeps losing relevance with more conservatism and isolationist policies, but the English seem to be happy with this. They've gone from the empire on which the sun never sets to a tiny island in western europe.

Scotland is soon to be free. Wales is tethered to England for economic reasons. Maybe the Irish will get Northern Ireland back and we can have a united Eire once more kiss
