Some of the Nigerians evacuated from Libya in the wake of the ongoing unrest in the North African country said yesterday that they “would rather live in Libya than in Nigeria” because they are better off there. The returnees, who told Daily Trust that they have three different names – the one they use in Libya, the one they have on their passports and the one they were known by before going to Libya – gave their names as Muhammad Ibrahim and Ibrahim. They both hail from Abia State.

They said, “The living condition in Libya is better than what you have in Nigeria. Life is cheap and the level of security is quite fantastic. After the crisis, we would be ready to go back (to Libya).”

Some however said that they found themselves in Libya on their way to Europe. They have variously spent between four and 17 years in Libya.

One of the returnees, the professional boxer Bash Ali, who said he was in Tripoli for medical treatment, commended the Federal Government for the evacuation exercise and the courteous and speedy response of the concerned agencies.

“I am proud to be a Nigerian… I am proud of this encouraging exercise. Home is home… and home is sweet. Nothing is more comforting than to be among your people at home,” Bash Ali said. He said as an African, he was not happy at the turn of events in Libya, saying that the crisis was caused by bad advisers rather than by a single individual.

Sources at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) also told Daily Trust that 80% of Nigerians living in Libya hail from Imo, Anambra, Edo, Abia and Delta states.

Meanwhile, the second batch of Nigerian returnees landed in Abuja at around 11pm on Sunday with 536 people on board the chartered aircraft. This brings the total number of the evacuees so far to 1,035, including children and adults. There were 499 people in the first batch of returnees. NEMA’s Muhammad Sani-Sidi, while receiving the second batch at the airport, said the next flight will leave for Tripolion Tuesday to bring back the remaining Nigerians that have been registered and screened for the evacuation. Their number is close to 1000, he said.

He said so far NEMA has continued to provide food and medication as required to the evacuees at the designated Special Camp along Abuja International Airport road. He said transportation arrangements were provided to take the passengers to their respective states of origin.

Welcoming the returnees to Nigeria on behalf of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry Dr. Martin Uhomoibhi said the federal government is passionate about the well-being of its people and is glad to see them safely back to the country. He urged the returnees to be law-abiding citizens and contribute to national development.

Dr. Uhomoibhi told Daily Trust later on phone that the camping of the Nigerian returnees was to allow for their proper screening in order to know where each of them belong, adding that the sick among them have been treated.

“We camped them because they came in after 12 am in the night and they have to be kept somewhere for their safety and to allow for proper screening to be carried out because their particulars needed to be checked before they will be allowed to go to their various states,” he said.

“I don’t know if there were convicts among them; but I am sure that all of them will be screened and if there is any among them, they will be sent to where they belong,” he added. Dr Uhomoibhi also said that he is not aware of any arrangement between the two countries concerning the convicts among the returnees.

But a source at the Foreign Affairs Ministry said the returnees are being camped for proper screening before their release because there are convicted criminals who were serving jail terms in Libya. He said that among the first batch of the returnees who alighted from the plane were convicts who even attempted to break cameras when they were being recorded, saying they would not want to be shown on television.

Actually, Gadaffi has done a HORRIBLE job in Libya, considering they have the largest oil reserves in Africa, and have a population the size of IKEJA, Lagos. (6 million).

By right, every Libyan should live in a MANSION with a Bentley and Mercedes parked in the driveway.

Instead,  ''While Libya has the largest oil reserves in Africa, two-thirds of the 6.5 million strong population live on less than $2 a day.''

http://english.aljazeera.net/news/africa/2011/02/2011219811665897.html

With Gadaffi accused of embezzling $82 billion, not including his family and associates.

So people really need to use their BRAINS before making these illiterate comparisons of Libya and Nigeria. If truth be told, Nigeria has actually done FAR BETTER than Libya, if you consider that the Nigerian middle class numbers at least 40 million, although she's got less oil than Libya. Thus, Nigeria has created a better life for at least 7 times more people than Gadaffi has, with less resources.

The Libyan people understand this all too well, which is why they want Gadaffi gone.  Semi-literates on NL, and returnee Igbo traders from Tripoli who cannot analyse beyond their nose and stomach, are the ones burdened by fruitless juxtaposing of the Nigerian situation with that of Libya.

People are misreading the situation here. The issue is not whether anybody has a choice of living in nigeria or not, but do the libyans want to see you in their country. And what part of some of the returness camew from jail and thus should be thanking their stars they were allowed to go, are some not getting.

Chinese evacuated 29000 of their citizens and said over 1000 refused to leave Libya. So, these goons who find it better living in Libya, were they forced to hop on the plane and come to Nigeria?

Honestly. Some people are just not in their right frame of mind. The worst is, some people will use that to blame everything Nigeria because some fools fail to use their brains.

Of course, they were better off. Take a look at all the indices used to measure how developed a nation is and you will see that Libya shits on Nigeria. If Nigeria was any good, they wouldn't have left in the first place.

All these places in the Arab world where wind of change is sweeping through are much better than Nigeria.
