Don't you think using "impressive" to describe the current Nigerian rail development in this administration is rather high praise? Have you seen the trains? They're like upgraded versions of the trains used in the 40's.

In 2020, not one high speed/bullet train. Perhaps a fair enough development, certainly not impressive.

Obasanjo had nothing to do with it!, people confuse the Abuja light rail project(intra city)whose ground breaking was performed by Obasanjo with the Abuja-Kaduna rail project .

It is imperative to note that apart of the grass clearing (tagged official ground breaking in 2007) for the intracity project Obasanjo never did anything to actualise the dream. the intracity project was originally linked to the Abuja's bid to host the Commonwealth Games in 2014 which never happened!

Nigeria Halts China Railway Firm In Its Tracks

China's top railway builder has encountered a glitch in a lucrative project in Nigeria, jeopardizing a large portion of the firm's future profits and prompting analysts to wonder if a closer look at the risks of its aggressive African investment strategy is in order.

The Nigerian government has temporarily suspended China Railway Construction's $8.3 billion rail project linking Nigeria's north and south. The news sent China Railway Construction shares plunging 18.5%, to 7.99 Hong Kong dollars ($1.03), in Hong Kong, the steepest drop since its initial public offering in March.

Nigeria's Transportation Ministry wants to renegotiate contract terms for the rail link, set to span 1,315 kilometers (817.1 miles) between coastal Lagos and the northern city of Kano, China Railway Construction revealed in a statement filed to the Hong Kong Stock Exchange late Monday night. The government's action deals a big blow to the infrastructure firm, as the rail project represents fully 13.9% of the total value of all its contracts as of Sept. 30, according to the statement.

The Nigerian government's motives are likely both political and financial in nature, analysts say. A turnover of leaders has put major foreign contracts in the country under review and in limbo. Meanwhile, the drastic fall in oil prices has squeezed Nigeria's budget, limiting its ability to finance major infrastructure projects. The 17-month-old administration of President Umaru Yar'Adua has expressed skepticism about the terms for infrastructure and oil contracts negotiated by its predecessor and has called the 2006 contract with China Railway Construction "over inflated."

The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi on Friday apologized to Nigerians over the suspension of the Iju-Abeokuta free train ride during the 2019 general elections.

Amaechi tendered the apology during the monthly rail inspection of the Lagos-Ibadan modernisation project in Ibadan.

He said that the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) suspended the three months free train ride due to security and safety of passengers.

“It was suspended by the Chinese and the excuse they gave me was that they cannot allow it run because of safety, since they have not completed the second line but they are almost through with it.

“It is almost completed from Iju to Abeokuta. I want to apologise to Nigerians that they suspended it when they left the country, which I didn’t envisage, they will go back soon,” Amechi said.

NRC increases freight by 100 per cent

The Lagos District of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has increased the number of freight it carries weekly by 100 per cent, saying it now moves 1270 tonnes of fertilizers from Lagos to Kaduna, and pipes from Lagos to Zaria.

In a statement by the District Public Relations Officer, Khadijah Aroyewun – Adekomaiya, the corporation said the development came as a result of improved partnership with haulage firms in the movement of heavy goods to different parts of the country, where tracks are available.

According to Adekomaiya, the rise in freight represents a tremendous growth from previous months where 575.4 and 500 tonnes of goods were lifted in the months of March and April 2016, respectively.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation moved 3,200 tonnes of goods out of Apapa ports by rail in its freight services in July, Jerry Oche, the Lagos District Manager, has said.
Oche told the News Agency of Nigeria on Sunday in Lagos that the rail freight services helped to remove about 160 trucks off the roads last month.
He said: “We just started rail freight services and we now move containers from Lagos to Kano with two train services a week and each train moves 500 tonnes.
“We are moving fertilizers from Lagos to Kaduna and from Lagos to Gombe with two trains a week and each train moves 600 tonnes.
“We also moved pipes from Lagos ENL Port Terminal to Zaria, with two trains a week and each train moves 600 tonnes.”
According to Oche, each train has 20 wagons and each wagon moves 30 tonnes of goods, while most trucks could only move 20 tonnes.
He said: “If a haulage firm wants to move 1,200 tonnes of goods, it will need about 60 trucks, which may affect operations and logistics at the port.
“Whereas only two trains will be needed to move them, thus preventing road accidents and making our roads last longer.”
Oche said many haulage firms had started making enquiries about the corporation’s freight services on the movement of their heavy goods.
He said: “A lot of people and companies want to be convinced that we can do it, move their goods up to different parts of the country.
“Some even assumed that railway is dead but we’re slowly but steadily coming back.”
Oche said the rail freight services was helping to decongest the ports.
He said the corporation had also partnered with haulage firms on the movement of heavy goods from Lagos to different parts of the country.
Oche said the rehabilitation of tracks linking coastal tank farms was underway to allow optimal use of pressurised tank wagons for lifting of petroleum products by rail.
