The British ruled Nigeria for over 60ys with hardly any complaints of Police brutality . Other than the massacre of protesting Aba women, I can hardly reference any other event during colonial rule where the police were accused of brutality or extrajudicial killings. Also, note that the average police officer was armed with only a baton and a whistle.

This continued until the outbreak of the civil war which saw to men of the police being drafted into military roles like mounting stop and search checkpoints while fully armed with automatic weapons.

After the civil war, the Police still kept their guns and checkpoints because there was a surge in violent crimes due to the profileartion of small arms and a criminal underworld composed mostly of Nigerian Army veterans of the civil war who still continued their looting .

In every way you look at it, the Nigerian Army can be blamed for the root of the Nigerian police. Under subsequent military juntas, the police operated under the jackboot mentality of which the military juntas used in suppressing the people.

You have a valid point, but I think I will rather blame it on the government. Which is why we have leaders

cool

The Military Dictators saw Police as a major threat, and deliberately started under funding, under equipping them till the whole system became a rott

Before the Military Dictators, Police had neater White Uniforms, they had Land Rover Jeeps

Till date Police Budget remains around $50, million USD, While Military Budget overs around $500, million to $1 billion, Dasuki as even used Boko Haram as a decoy to Budget $2billion USD

Prior to 1966 coup, the Police was a very professional outfit.

The Police E-Branch (espionage unit) warned the Tafa Belewa govt of both the Awo coup plot attempt and that of Nzeagwu led coup

The military guys purged the police of many of her constitutional roles and even sacked professional officers and replaced them with useless mediicres.

The military did more harm than you can imagine.

Correct

As at 1966 there were only 10,000 officers and men in the Nigerian Army as against the Police that had well over 50,000 men.

The police had more intelligent and respected individuals than the army that was seen as a place for the dredges of society .

The police was so professional before the civil war that they even knew of and warned Belewa of both Awo's attempted coup and the Nzeagwu coup.

Awo's treason trial was a no contest as the police E-Branch had evidence from a sting operation were Awo was caught on tape discussing how to overthrow the govt. That's how good those guys were back then.

SSS or DSS was a unit under then Police NSO, EFCC got its officers from Force CID Special Fraud Unit, many of this branching out turned Police to Intelligence less agency that only partially react when crime was committed

CIB department of police then used to have plain Officers drinking at Bars and hotels, some had police funded shops just to gather information

The NSO was created by Obasanjo after Murtala was assassinated.

The NSO was the harbinger to the Police State we are under now.

The NSO was both unwilling to advice Shagari on the impending coup and was even active in said coup.

Under Buhari's military junta, the NSO became the main instrument of State oppression.

It was IBB that broke the NSO into three agencies, DSS, DMI and NIA.

Instead of one big snake you now hard 3 vipers.

These three alphabet agencies were then placed under the office of the National Security Advicer headed by Gwozo.

Abacha will use this office to terrorize the populace. The police then got relegated to check point duties .

The military truly destroyed the Police.

SARS and the NPF in general are beyond reform.

The centralized police must be disbanded in place of local policing.

I am against State police as it also domesticates same powers to the governors who will definitely abuse their powers even far worse than the president.

What we need is grassroot policing by elected Sherrifs who can either be removed via recall or voted out.

It is that time the police will be answerable to the people that elected and fund them.

But you must realise something that the global BLM ANTIFA riots against the Police is not in tandem with the End SARS movement.

ANTIFA and BLM are rioting against the system I am proposing here and in it's place a more centralized Chekist like Powerful Police State.
