The recent changes in our country Nigeria, which has seen young people being outspoken about key issues affecting their lifestyle has prompted the #Endsars protests across major cities around the country.

The protests though peaceful to an extent has seen some violence, which has led to the death of at least 10 people In the protests over police brutality. These deaths are as a result of gun shot wounds.



Protesting is a constitutional right guaranteed by the Constitution but you have to stay safe to be able to exercise that right.


Surviving a protest 101
Your wardrobe choice for the day is a vital part of surviving a Protest. You should wear something comfortable and simple like a jeans or 'jimms' , t-shirt and comfy shoes, just in case you need to accelerate.

Wear a mask or a bandana, which will serve as a protection from Corona virus and potentially tear gas.

Be aware and alert of the surrounding location, knowing your entry and exit point is key. Just in case things escalates you should know where to move to for safety.

Do not go to a protest alone. Go with at least one friend or with a group of friends, for a wolf is only safe in the pack. Ensure you Livestream or update on your social media while at a protest to document your activities.

Stay calm and don't be violent. During a protest your survival depends on the degree of calmness and quick thinking you possess especially in chaotic situations. Be peaceful and civil least you give an insinuation to justify the police brutality.

There is quite a high chance that live ammunition and tear gas will be fired at protesters in Nigeria, take cover, for an event of tear gas put on your nose mask or soak your Bandana in water and cover your nose. Leave the area to a safe location.

You need food and water. When going to a protest in your backpack there should be snacks and water to refuel your energy.

Have fun and make new friends. In the heat of a protest align with people with same energy, make new friends and enjoy your protest time together.

These few tips are not ultimate, the only ultimate thing is to be smart by knowing when to move when the situation escalates. You can only protest when you are alive.
