In light of the ongoing #EndSARS protest in Nigeria, where young Nigerians have been calling for far-reaching systemic changes for ‘a better Nigeria,’ it is alleged that certain government actors who do not want to see the status-quo changed have employed the services of thugs and armed them to beat up legitimate protestors.

The engagement of thugs seems to have been the next resort for these political actors after the use of brute force by the security forces did not seem to deter protestors nationwide. Reports of thugs attacking protestors in Lagos, Abuja, Benin City, Jos and other places have been rife with a number of videos circulating on social media where members of the Nigerian security forces are seen having some meetings with alleged touts in secluded places, subsequent to which these same characters are transported to protest venues to engage in acts of violence – many times, these thugs were overpowered by protestors who caught them on camera and got them confessing to being paid by some people to perpetuate these attacks.

It appears that after the script of attack on protestors by thugs failed, these same political elements decided that they wold infiltrate the albeit peaceful protests with paid thugs to attack government buildings – the first of this happened yesterday in Edo State, where a maximum security prison was allegedly attacked and set open by thugs who claimed to be #EndSARS protestors, causing the release and escape of a number of so-called “prisoners.”

When videos of these so-called prisoners popped up online, many disputed them because the prisoners were not in prison uniforms and many of them spotted the latest sports and designer wears, with some even possessing headphones and music gadgets. But just like clock-work, the government of Edo State declared a 24-hour curfew so as to take steam out of the momentum the protests in the state had garnered.

It appears that the same script was used in Lagos State today as thugs were allegedly paid to attack some Police stations in the city and within the space of an hour of the burning of the first Police station, the state government declared a 24-hour curfew which was meant to start at 4pm (local time) today.

But as things stand, it appears that protestors are unperturbed and unmoved as some people are still out engaging in peaceful protests while some other parts of Lagos is practically at war with local Police with gun battles ongoing.
