Every society has laws in place that help to protect that society. The police are in charge of protection and security as dictated by the laws of the land.

Over the years the Nigerian police has evolved. Many years ago the fear of a policeman was the beginning of wisdom for many. Policemen wore their tops and shorts with/without shoes, carried batons and were well respected. Those whose fathers and grandfathers were police personnel have a lot of stories to tell about how their fathers carried themselves modestly and were respected. Bribes were not demanded and jobs were well done.

Our police has been taken over by certain men and women who see their uniforms as personal shops where they make their daily incomes. The semi educated among them interprete laws to suit their own purposes. We hear policemen referring to decent people as "miscreants". Among the police people you find alchoholics and drug users. How can such people refer to decent people as miscreants? In this covid19 period, we have seen police personnel without face protection arresting people without face protection for violating the order.

Some of our officers have disgraced the image of the police beyond redemption. We have even seen policemen getting beaten up by soldiers because of the activities of the irresponsible ones among them.

As it stands, with no dignity left anymore, can the police go out to effect arrests without the fear of attacks? Truly they have lost their respect.
