Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Wednesday, inaugurated an eight-member Judicial Panel of Inquiry into human rights violations by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, unit of the Nigeria Police Force, NPF, in the state.

Ortom said the inaugurated panel was aimed at addressing the complaints by the End SARS protesters.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony at the state’s Government House, the governor said the constitution and swearing-in of the panel followed the resolution of the National Economic Council at its 108th meeting in Abuja recently.

He stressed that the protests had challenged all leaders to rise and demonstrate sincerity and commitment in tackling the nation’s challenges.

Ortom said the panel, which is headed by a retired Chief Judge of the State, Justice Adam Onum, has six months to complete its assignment and urged members to justify the confidence reposed in them.

He also disclosed that in line with the resolutions of the National Economic Council, his administration would soon set up the Special Security and Human Rights Committee to monitor activities of the Special or Tactical units to be established by the Nigeria Police Force.

“The protests have therefore provided us leaders with the opportunity to correct decades of illegalities and injustices meted on the people. It is against this background that we are today carrying out this very important state function of inaugurating the Judicial Panel of Inquiry,” the governor said.

Retired Justice Adam Onum on behalf of other members, thanked the Governor for the trust to carry out the task and pledged commitment and fair hearing to all parties.

Other members of the panel include Mrs. Josephine Haba, Pharmacist Moses Asoo, Anthony Ogboji retired Commissioner of Police, Ityonongo Terdoo John Mark, Joshua Tiv, Joshua Tyoyer and Edward Yange who also doubles as Secretary.

The Judicial Panel of Inquiry is to conclude its assignment within six months.

The panel’s terms of reference include to receive and investigate complaints of Police brutality, human rights violations or related extra-judicial killings, recommend compensation and other remedial measures where appropriate.

For many days, I watched the protests. I followed with keen interest on the streets of Twitter and IG. I felt so much hope in my heart that change is finally about to come to Nigeria.

Then this....

My nation's army fired live bullets into groups of peaceful protesters whose crime was simply asking for change. People seeking an end to the mindless killing of their brothers, sisters, children and friends by the dreaded SARS.

What is the value of a Nigerian life?

In a democracy, our own government treats our requests like the ranting of a recalcitrant child. How can the penalty for breaching a curfew be the death penalty

My heart bleeds, I am angry! I feel helpless and shocked!

Which way, Nigeria? God, please help my country. We are tired!

All good politicians in this South Nigeria should stop all this rubbish

South Nigeria republic all the way

Constitution afresh
Election afresh

Saboteurs just reduce the people stress by just killing yourself without any talk, cause if you are caught, you better wish never to have being born

Pull yourself from the north
Buhari will never resign in Nigeria
But in South Nigeria republic he is long forgotten (wise forget tribalism now or never)

Another panel set up... let us wait for the outcome.

Season of panels.

They should only make sure everything is fast.
No time to be dragging issues like before.

They keep asking that Buhari should address the nation. Is the nation on protest? No

The so called protesters are just bunch of criminals vandalizing properties, and crippling businesses in the name of protest. If you deny this, then tell us who are the leaders or organisers of the protest?
And, if the govt agree to talk to them now, who will represent them?

They are mere bunch of sponsored, headless, irresponsible, jobless, lazy youths who do not know what they are demanding for.

THE speed with which the governors are setting up investigative panels,we know nothing is coming out of it. THE one that was set up by Anambra State govt on extra judicial killing by CSP James nwafor, nothing came out of it till date.

Why??

Because they don't have power to prosecute those found culpable whether police or Army

They should also investigate the extrajudicial murder of Gana who was granted amnesty by the state government, it was a slight in the Benue people and Govt even if he was the worst criminal, but amnesty under the law makes him innocent at the time of his killing.
