C# Devs, What's The Way To Go, Desktop/wfp Or Web/asp by JahBwoy: 5:05am On Oct 23, 2020
Hi guys..
I have an ish that has been bothering me.
I actually started as an Support Specialist but I had a thing for Code so I kind of sandwiched my self between infrastructure, cloud and code. I started with using Powershell to interact with Azure, then I started automating some routine stuffs with Powershell. At some point I digged into Dev-Ops too. At some point I felt Powershell was limiting and wanted to hack more into the .NET framework. So I started converting
My scripts to C# code and wrapping them with a wfp GUI. It's working out and I have been using that process to learn c# syntax and .NET programming. But at a point I'm confused.
1. I actually have no aim of been a software dev. I just wanna learn. NET programming to make me a more Sophisticated cloud infrastructure and Dev-Ops guy. In the future I want to evolve as a thorough Systems Engineer.
2. I find WFP very easy to work with. Reminds me of JS/CSS/HTML interaction. But it's an old technology and focused solely on th desktop. So each time I'm studying it always feels like I'm late, like I'm doing something obselete. I know no knowledge is wasted but I wanted to hear from experienced guys if I'm in the right path with WFP and C#, should I switch to the web instead with ASP? What are thier differences and how marketable? With my background and current skill set, what should be my path with these technologies?
Best Regards

you don't know what you want, why asking what is marketable when you have no interest in becoming a software developer? The information about what to learn to become marketable is solely for software developer

You should always have an idea of what tech is marketable, check reports and also Job Opening locally and internationally. But if System Engineering is your thing, then sure, there is one dude on Twitter Damilare , he does complex system engineering and it's interesting reading his code and learning stuff from him. You can pick up web and do that to earn the cash and still do your System engineering on the side. That's one field that is not touted enough here in Nigeria.

Impressive!!!
Mehn!It ain't easy doing all those.

That web dev takes alot of time to learn.Html, css and bootstrap na smallz but before mastering javascript and any of its framework, jquery, any backend language...it really takes long.
Maybe because I'm into computer hardware engineering along.

I always have an idea I want to try out on platforms so I take up different stuff, its a fulfilling hobby and it's profitable too. So its why I touch alot of things. But Mobile is the most interesting to me now. Its very complex and few Nigerians design performant apps unlike Abeg. Hardware engineering you know I've always loved emulation, and how people emulate hardware, or people doing FGPA emulators. You can try Svelte its easier, my colleagues are C++ engineers and know nothing about JavaScript but used svelte to build a simple and amazing application. It takes alot of time but I learn and work on a project at a go.

Yeah tech is very profitable,so I heard.
I wanted to venture into mobile app dev so I started learning python which I heard it is beginner friendly.Along the line,I found out I should have learnt Java instead. With python,I still have to learn kivvy to build an app.So I ditched it for Web dev.
I started with Html then css which is taking forever due to slow pace learning as a result of work.

The hardware engineering I'm into is not as wide and deep as that.I also don't work on the programming aspect nor do I emulate.
I basically work on the mechanical and electrical aspect of a computer. It's safe to say I'm a computer technician.

Can you share how I can tap into the lucrativeness of web dev? How can I be advantaged in web dev business??

First for web devs in terms of the market this is my analysis. The top jobs center around JavaScript becomes it is easier and cheaper to hire for depending on the platform and requirement. So with skills like Node/ React and also React Native, you will more likely get a job because of business companies for their apps. As you advance professionally you start to see limit in most of these technologies and gradually find your way into Native for pure peformance and more control. So my advice start to get a work, then as you progress get into more complex part.

As for the lucrative aspect , this are the following channels to earning as a developer, it is not new or uncommon, just that not alot of dev can sacrifice that much into this. To me the options are:

Starting your own company, if you build a product, it shows competence, if you can run the product with subscribers and making money, then you are on to something, because people will always refer you to either white-label or build similar, I can imagine the likes of the Abeg author getting jobs

Freelance

There are tons of freelance jobs out there, some that will take you into weird technologies such as Shopify, Moodle such as Upworks, and other freelance, just alot of stress

Marketplace
Selling business on scripts places like Envato and the rest

Making money as a dev is somewhat easy when you are good at what you do, alot of people don't have patience to take their time. They want to know a language in a month.

I also always advise people to have personal projects, sometimes those personal projects, the architecture could be what is required for some startups. So have serious and complex projects. I hate seeing todo apps, I like apps that is exploring an idea not just building a calculator in html and js. A lot of Nigerian devs I know earn thousands of dollars from home without stepping out of the door. Na just luck and favour and serious packaging.

Communities and networking matters a lot too, alot of us like to code in solo which is bad, because if you are good at what you do, there will always be someone interested in your ideas.

Very comprehensive and apt!
I really appreciate your input and your time dedicated to impacting me.

I will go for freelancing.I am dedicating now to learning,by the time I am good,I'll try getting freelancing works.

Sorry for replying late,I'm at work

Thanks once again.
