But what could make a stray bullet loose direction against the position of the gun/shooter despite the higher accurate velocity at which it was shot?

When u shoot , the rifle shakes u, if ur foot is not well position as a civilian, u r most likely to mis target ...and the results of such , is also stray bullet.

When a projected body reaches its greatest height, the vertical component of the velocity becomes zero. Hence, the body will start accelerating downward under the influence of gravity. Without air resistance, the acceleration due to the gravity of the bullet should be 9.8m/s².
So since there's air resistance, the acceleration of the bullet under freefall should be less than 9.8m/s², which is less dangerous when dropped on someone.
For a bullet to reach its maximum height, the gun has to be positioned at an angle of 45°.

Applied Mechanics.
Maths/Engineering/physics guys can relate.

The Physics Behind Why Firing A Gun Into The Air Can Kill Someone

Would you fire a gun into the air in celebration if you knew that, when the bullet comes down, it could kill somebody? It’s no surprise that bullets fired towards a target can easily destroy whatever they run into: a bullet from an AK-47 leaves the rifle traveling at over 1,500 miles per hour (670 meters per second): about double the speed of sound. Despite only having a mass of about five grams — under a fifth of an ounce — it’s got the energy of a brick dropped from a 30 story building. Concentrated into a tiny surface area at the bullet tip, it can easily break through your skin. And once it does, that energy and momentum tears through your body, ripping a hole through blood vessels, muscle, and potentially vital organs. No wonder it can kill you.

But what if the bullet is fired up, rather than directly at a target? If you performed that experiment on the Moon, if the bullet went up at 1,500 miles per hour, then no matter what angle you fired it at and how long it took to come back to the lunar surface, it would come down at 1,500 miles per hour. A bullet fired away from the Moon’s surface would be just as lethal as one fired across it. But on Earth, we have our atmosphere, which means we also have air resistance. A bullet fired straight up, with no wind, might reach a height of 10,000 feet (about three kilometers), but will come back down at only around 150 miles per hour: just 10% of the speed and with only 1% of the energy as the originally fired bullet.

Ultra-high speed photo of bullet fired out of a[+]
But in reality, there are extra factors at play:

We do have wind, which can make bullets fired even straight up come down up to two miles away.

Not every bullet is fired straight up; many are fired at an angle. If the bullet never stops or tumbles, it can maintain much greater speeds: many hundreds of miles per hour.
All a bullet needs to do to be potentially lethal is break the skin, which occurs at different speeds for different bullets and different people.
So in order to know whether a bullet will break your skin or not, we need to look at two things: the bullet type and your skin type.

Various weights, sizes and calibers of bullets. Even at the same muzzle velocity, when fired up, these bullets will all come down at different speeds. Various weights, sizes and calibers of bullets.[+]
The generally accepted threshold for breaking the skin barrier is 136 miles per hour, although some bullet/skin combinations will cause the bullet to bounce off you at up to 225 miles per hour. The pointier a bullet is, the slower it can be moving and still break your skin. (Hollow point bullets are more dangerous not because it’s easier for them to puncture your skin, but because they create more damage once they do.) Bullets of different sizes and calibers can puncture skin more easily: buckshot will perforate skin at 145 miles per hour and bullets from a .38 caliber revolver will do so at just 130 miles per hour. Bullets from a 9mm handgun may max out at speeds as low as 102 miles per hour. And a .30 caliber bullet, according to Mattoo’s equation, might do so at only 85 miles per hour.

In addition, skin thickness varies from person-to-person and at different places on your body. The skin on your upper lip is 50% thicker than the skin on your cheek, and the skin just below your cheekbones by your nose is even thinner, particularly in the elderly. Babies and young children have very thin skin relative to adults, and while the elderly have thicker skin in general, it has less elasticity and is easier to tear and puncture.

According to Hatcher’s Notebook, where U.S. Army Major General Julian Hatcher reported on a huge suite of military ballistics tests, a .30 caliber bullet has a terminal speed of 200 miles per hour, not 150. When you fire a bullet into the air, it typically takes between 20 and 90 seconds for it to come down, depending on the angle it was fired at, its muzzle velocity and its caliber. New years and July 4th, in the USA, are particularly dangerous in urban areas for this, as injuries from falling bullets and even occasionally deaths result. While reports from hospitals are often disputed by police, there are well-documented cases that prove how lethal this can be. In 2010, Marquel Peters, four years old, was killed by a stray falling bullet in Decatur, GA.

As long as a bullet can puncture your skin, the[+]
If you must fire a gun into the air, the way to minimize your potential risk to yourself and others is to:

fire the bullet as close to vertical as possible (where it will lose the most speed),
from a low altitude location (where air resistance is higher),
in a rural, low-population-density area (where it’s less likely to hit a person),
and to fire a lighter, larger bullet (with a lower terminal velocity).

And finally, as a bystander, know that you aren’t completely safe from a hail of falling bullets until two minutes have passed since the final gunshot. Firing a gun into the air might be extremely unlikely to kill the person firing it, but there’s a reason that most major cities have outlawed it: your freedom to celebrate ends when your celebration starts to kill innocent bystanders.

projectile!chai! I so much love physics! when in college and up till now!see,an an object fired at angle less than 90degree forms a path of motion called a parabola, depending on the force of rec oil velocity ,mass of bullet in gram and acceleration due to gravity. in the absence of friction from air or weather,it can land with almost the same force with with which it was fired and can be quite lethal.(distance traveled can affect its flight time,KE& PE through)but when fired straight up , no matter, the calibre,it reaches it highest point (apogee) due air drag(friction) and force of gravity which is constantly acting downward and finally stop it ,at this point the KE is spent and immediately convert to PE,which is less than the KE,then begins it downward journey with much reduced power in the first few seconds but can maintain a con stant speed towards the last few meters before it finally come to rest, again, all this depends on weather condition ad
such as wind speed and direction .

Re: Where Do Bullets Go When Fired Straight Into The Air? by WAECMATHEMATICS: 10:17pm On Oct 23, 2020
Interesting and technical topic!

When a bullet is fired almost vertically into the air, the bullet would keep going upwards in the sky, while it speed reduces, until it reaches maximum height. Its speed reduces because of gravity and air drag. At maximum height, the speed of the of bullet would be zero.

For the return path of the bullet's journey (i.e. falling down), it's initial speed is zero. It's like a mango hanging on a tree about to fall.

As the bullet falls, it's speed increases (i.e. it's accelerating). This falling speed would not keeping increasing forever. This speed would keep increasing until it attains Terminal Speed. Terminal speed simply means maximum constant speed the bullet would attain while falling.

After the falling bullet attains terminal speed, it would continue to fall with that same constant speed with no acceleration.

Falling objects attain terminal speed because of the presence of air i.e air drag. So, the falling terminal speed is considerably small when compared with the muzzle speed (i.e the speed with which the bullet was fired at the beginning.).

Assuming there is no air drag, the bullet would return to the ground with the same speed with which it was fired! Deadly!

So, the bullet returns to the ground with terminal speed, a relatively small speed when compared with the bullet's starting speed.

The bone of contention: How dangerous is terminal speeds of bullets?

Bullets are highly streamlined to defy air drag as much as possible. They are highly dense so as to cause as much damage as possible. With this two factors, the terminal speeds of bullets are considerably high when compared with other objects.

Even though when a falling bullet is not accelerating, it could still be lethal depending on the weight and the height it's falling through.

Kuwaitis were having end of war celebration one particular year and their soldiers were firing bullets into the air. Falling bullets killed about 20 of the civilians who came to celebrate with them! Even though the falling bullets were falling with terminal speeds, the bullets still killed some people at that ceremony.

Summarily, falling bullets can kill depending on the type of bullets and angle of projection. So, take cover when armed men start shooting even into the air!

This is a big misinformation. The people liking this post do not know. Whatever goes up must come down, and in the case of a bullet, when it reaches it maximum height, it returns to the earth at the speed of gravity which is simply 9.8m/s and at that, it affect nothing. Thank God DJ Switch has finally made a video about what happened that night. For those who didn't watch it, she mentioned two forces; the Nigerian army and the police force. The Nigerian army came first, and when they left, the police force (SARS) continued. Perhaps, reason why there was an increase in the death toll and why the army also denies it.

Now, you may be wondering why DJ Switch and others took the bodies to the soldiers. Let me tell you what happened.

According to Brigadier General Francis Omata, who was alleged as the person who gave his soldiers, the command to kill unarmed protesters at the Lekki Toll Gate, he didn't do it.

Francis said he was not the one who gave the order. It was Lt. Col S.O Bello of the 65 Battalion Bonny Camp.

Why his name is being spread about is because when he heard the plot, he rushed to the scene 39 minutes later to pull back his boys.

He had to announce his name to prevent them from shooting him. This was how people got his name and thought he led them. Here is the link below to read this information:

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.withinnigeria.com/2020/10/21/brigadier-francis-omata-clears-the-air-on-lekkimassacre-names-officer-who-led-the-operation/amp/

Yes, the Nigerian Army under the command of LT. Col S.O Bello, gave the command to kill unarmed protesters. Who sent Bello?

Now, the reason why DJ Switch trusted the army enough to lay the bodies at their feet was because of Omata. She thought she could trust him, since he came to stop his boys. So for those wondering, I hope you have your answers.

Now, in her statement, she said the SARS police came later. You know they are still disgruntled about their dissolution and took out their anger on the protesters. They've been killing before, it's not a new thing.

The bulk of the killing, the probable 63 dead youths were killed by SARS, the same people this protest is all about.

And...

They are silencing people from speaking the truth.

I found this out when someone made a post of one of the victims and how he was killed. When I got back to check the post, I didn't see it. I asked the lady, she said they told her to take it down.

Who are they?

Now, let's look at a time line of event since the Lekki Massacre:

Sanwo-Olu wrote;

"This is the toughest night of our lives as forces beyond our direct control have moved to make dark notes in our history, but we will face it and come out stronger." This was by 7:43 10/20/20.

Meanwhile the shooting continued until the next morning. Forces beyond our Governors control stopped him from directing the ones under his control to stop the shooting.

We also heard the military was looking for the survivors of the shooting to kill them off.

This was after Sanwo-Olu wrote,

"There are currently 10 patients at the Gen. Hospital, 11 at Reddington, and 4 at Vedic; with mild to moderate levels of injuries while 2 are receiving intensive medical care."

I believe he made this statement as a means of informing the military where the survivors are since making phone calls might leave trails when investigations begin.

Reno Omokri tweeted on 17th,

"I just got privilege information that there is division in the military about how to handle EndSARS protesters, with Burutai pushing for a Shiite scenario, similarly to the Zaria massacre."

This was on 17th October, 2020. The Lekki massacre happened 20th October, 2020 with the military and SARS hiding dead bodies so they can easily twist the story.

Do you know what these guys are doing?

They want to discredit the Lekki story and they are winning!

These people maimed the Nigerian Youths that went out to protest for a better life, they killed them, and threatened their family to keep quiet.

They are monsters!

See, I am a physicist. Law of of gravity depends on the volume of that particular object. In the case of bullets, when targeted vertically upwards, when accelerating down, it automatically reduces its forces which can still be harmful for any trapped surface or objects but not as when it accelerating upwards. FORCE OF GRAVITY IS DIRECTLY PROPORTIONAL TO ITS VOLUME.

You r wrong ... Stray bullet is because they fail to maintain vertical position of the gun while shooting mostly for AK47... Every gun has its range "distance covered" by the bullet. Once that distance is met the bullet drops to the ground. Hence the bullet becomes harmless after required speed and distance is met.
The last part is wrong. Bullet remains dangerous even at drop point, depending on where it hits and if it hits a surface before it hits a person.
