Melfort surgeon first winner of national rural surgical excellence award

The Canadian Association of General Surgeons (CAGS) has named Melfort surgeon Dr. Adeyemi Laosebikan the first recipient of The G. William N. Fitzgerald Award for Excellence in Surgery.

“I am delighted and proud of the entire staff of Melfort Hospital and the City of Melfort. We are very fortunate to have passionate and dedicated people working together to ensure and improve access to healthcare. This award is for all of us as we have worked together to achieve this success,” Dr. Yemi said, also acknowledging the support of his colleagues in Prince Albert and Saskatoon.

Dr. Adeyemi Laosebikan, fondly known as Dr. Yemi by patients and staff at Melfort Hospital, is the first recipient of The G. William N. Fitzgerald Award of Excellence in Surgery by the Canadian Association of General Surgeons.

The award, presented at the 2019 Canadian Surgery Forum in Montreal September 6, recognizes rural general surgeons for commitment to the betterment of surgery for rural populations and to the practice of the surgical arts through education, advocacy, and dedication.

Dr. Yemi has provided 24/7 surgical coverage as the sole surgical practitioner serving Melfort since 2004. He is a tireless advocate for maintaining and improving surgical programming in rural Saskatchewan and ensuring patients have access to general surgical services as close to home as possible. His scope of practice is broad and advanced and he is the only surgeon in northern Saskatchewan to provide Endoscopic Retrograde Cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) for the diagnosis and treatment of biliary or pancreatic duct issues.

An associate professor with the U of S College of Medicine, Dr. Yemi has been published in several peer review medical journals, and been a guest lecturer at local and international medical conferences. He supports rural student placements through mentoring, tutoring and training, and assesses physicians for the College of Physicians and Surgeons. He is also a philanthropist that volunteers countless hours doing mission work overseas, and actively volunteers with many organizations in the Melfort area.

“He is an extremely valued, beloved and respected member of our hospital team,” summarized Melfort Hospital facility administrator Nadine Mevel-Degereness.
