Who Is Gen. Muhammed Buhari ? Detailed by riket(f): 12:23am On Mar 22, 2011
A native of Katsina State, Muslim, born in 1942, Buhari was 7th head of state of Nigeria (1983 - 1985. His initial military training was at the Nigerian military training school and military college, Kaduna. This was furthered at the Officer's Cadet School (UK), Army Mechanical Transport School (UK), Defence Services' Staff College (India), and United States Army War College. His previous work experience includes: Governor (North-Eastern Nigeria, 1975), Federal Commissioner for Petroleum Resources (1976-78), Chairman, NNPC (1978), Chairman of Petroleum Trust Fund (PTF, '95 - '99).

Within 2 years of military rule, Buhari implemented a number of measures, some of which were considered extreme, hence his reputation as being authoritarian. Nigerians were forced by whip-brandishing soldiers to queue up at bus stops; tardy civil servants were subjected to 'frog jump' punishment, and press freedom was restricted. In a bid to grow the economy, imports were cut, resulting in a rise in commodity prices and ultimate inflation. However, in 1995, he was appointed chairman of the PTF by the Sani Abacha administration. There is a general perception that he handled this excess oil revenue fund with transparency and efficiency.

Relative to the political scene, Buhari is certainly not a newcomer. In 2003 and 2007, he contested the presidential elections on the ANPP platform and lost in both cases to the ruling party, PDP. He unsuccessfully challenged both election results in court.

He is judged to be a man who commands a sizeable level of followership and respect, especially in some northern circles. This may not be unconnected with the successful implementation of an anti corruption and indiscipline campaign during his military rule.

Many Nigerians still see this effort as having instilled the highest level of order, discipline and perhaps accountability in the nation's history.

On the global front, Buhari is reported to be well respected. It is on record that he and Nelson Mandela were the only private African individuals invited by the White House to Barack Obama's inauguration ceremony.

To the average Nigerian youth, Buhari falls into the older generation category. While he also has employed the use of a website and electronic social networking as campaign tools, it is not clear whether he will fit well to bridge the generational gap between past leaders and the current crop of upwardly mobile, technology-enabled Nigerian youth.

Regarding national issues such as accountability and governance, he proposes the concept of an online budget monitoring and performance system. He has set a target to generate and distribute at least 15,000 MW of electricity by 2015, achieve a real GDP annual growth of 10%, transform the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) to a commercial business, and progress the implementation of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB). A critical point of his manifesto is to make information technology, manufacturing, agriculture and entertainment Nigeria's key economic drivers. Are these goals a possible recycling of old political promises or do they portend fresh and innovative resolutions to issues?

General Buhari's current campaign is centred on providing good governance, economic recovery and infrastructure development, power and energy, agriculture, education, health, land and transport, women empowerment, security and the Niger-delta and unemployment. These goals with sub-activities are identifiable in his published manifesto online. The dichotomy of his person still poses the question - military or democrat?

Same rubbish, different day. Dry cleaner, keep laundering Buhari’s dirty image, but one thing you must know is that, the more you bath vulture, the more ugly he becomes. Buhari is a hard sell.

In your dream. Buhari is the only military General who is not in PDP. That tells you a thing or two about his truthfulness. Why do all military Generals (present and past) in PDP? The answer is to loot the treasury.

Buhari will win the election except he doesn't win in SW.

Let no one be in doubt about our readiness to effect a change in Aso Rock in 2015 with Buhari leading us! The South West is peopled by pragmatic,open-minded and clear thinking personalities who are not in the bandwagon of hating anybody just becos our fathers or mothers have told us the tribe such one belongs to is bad. Buhari stand shoulder high against anyone in the PDP....despite the fact that d PDP has launched a never ending disparaging media tirade against him yet they have not been able to diminish his incorruptibility and for the their new musical single which is that he is a fanatic n all that....you either link him with such with hard evidence or forever hold your peace

For the records,I am a xtian and a yoruba who adore Buhari to no end!

Upon all his education in Western World, he is fighting against Western Education (aim of Boko Haram) and supporting almajiri. If he "mistakenly" enters as President Nigerians will suffer more compare to PDP regime suffer. I pity for this man followers

People in SW decided to stay home last time because of the alliance failure between Tinubu and Buhari. Only about 30% elegible Yoruba voters voted in Southwest last time. The mistake won't be repeated in 2015. Even in Yoruba churches in SW, they are campaigning for Buhari like never before. This Al-Mustafa release from prison is the nail in the coffin for Jonathan in SW. The Yorubas who wanted to vote for Jonathan but noncommittal are now permanently in Buhari's camp.

Jonathan shall hear from the silent majority in 2015.

You are lost! Who told you Buhari is fighting against western education? The same Buhari who built libraries in Nigerian schools and supplied them with text-books as PTF Chairman is now against western education? Students used to get free text-books during Buhari's tenure as Head of State. We were not buying text-books back in the days. Hate has destroyed your brain. Some never do well in life have instilled hate in you to the extent you are so blind and can't separate fact from fiction.

For your education, Boko Haram started under Yar'adua. Yar'adua killed their leader in 2008. Since then, they have promised never to stop fighting the Nigerian government.

A former Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Alhaji Mohammed Abba-Gana, Monday said another term of four years of President Goodluck Jonathan, would not hurt the North but prepare it better for future elections.

Abba-Gana spoke at a media parley in Lagos, just as Senator Emmanuel Bwacha from Taraba South senatorial district in Taraba State also said the Jonathan administration has begun to chart a new course for the nation, the results of which he claimed, were already manifesting.

But Abba-Gana, who dismissed threats against Jonathan’s re-election, said the best and wise thing for the North was to allow Jonathan return for another term of four years, the period it should make good use of in preparing for the 2019 presidential election.

While cautioning the northern elite on their utterances, Abba-Gana said if the North had produced between eight and nine heads of state and presidents, with poverty as a proof and underdevelopment, then, four years of Jonathan would not kill them.
“Something people in the North want Jonathan to come back and some don’t want him to return. But allowing Jonathan another four years will not take away anything from us. We’ve had between eight and nine heads of government. But what do we have to show for it? Poverty and underdevelopment!

I thought the Igbos were the next in line to take over in 2019. The Igbos said Jonathan will handover the presidency to them come 2019. It is now clear that Igbo are never going to get to the seat of Presidency in Nigeria in my life time if they continue to be played like football by PDP presidential arragement. I am only 35 and have 50-70 years left to live.

Governor Rochas was right after all that PDP arrangement will never favour Igbos to ever produce president. The PDP arrangement is to share the power between North (Hausa/Fulani) and the South (Yorubas only). The only way for Igbos to produce Nigerian President is to move to APC and negotiate.

The President of the Christian Associ
ation of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor, on Tuesday expressed sadness over former Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari’s support for the Boko Haram sect whom he described as blood sucking group.

According to CAN, Buhari should have advised the sect to stop their ‘evil’ deeds instead of justifying their activities.

The National Leader of the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) had recently questioned the “special treatment” given to the Niger-Delta militants by the Federal Government while the Boko Haram members were being killed and their houses destroyed by government.

Buhari was quoted to have said: “They (the Niger-Delta militants) were trained in some skills and were given employment, but the ones in the north were being killed and their houses were being demolished.”

Yes o! Life expectancy is low in Nigeria because of lack of medical access and low quality of life.

In my opinion, if you and others like you can take off the toga of tribal sentiment and bias/bigotry and also separate facts from fiction, there is no Nigerian living today that has a cleaner laundry than Buhari. It doesn't need laundry. This is coming from an Igbo man
