Dr Jude Onyinyechukwu Onyia has emerged as the newly elected Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) Enugu State Branch.

In a keenly contested election held today at the National Orthopaedic Hospital Enugu, Dr Onyia emerged victorious with 317 votes to defeat Dr James Akpeh who garnered 258 votes.

Dr J.O.T. Onyia will now succeed the outgoing Chairman of the association, Dr Ike Okwesili.

It will recalled that the NMA Enugu State Branch elections held on the 6th of August, 2020 was marred by violence at the venue of the election.

It was reported that thugs numbering over thirty, allegedly sponsored by a faction of the body, stormed the venue of the election at Michael Okpara Square while voting was ongoing and violently disrupted the election.

Some members of the association suffered various degree of injuries as they scampered for safety for fear of losing their lives.

Consequently, a Fact Finding Committee (FFC) was set up by the National Officers’ Committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the violent disruption of the election.

The committee, which was headed Dr. Mike O. Ogirima, with Dr. Agam Ayuk as Secretary, submitted it’s findings about two weeks ago and recommended among other things the suspension of Enugu State NMA activities for a period of one year.

However, at the Emergency Congress Meeting of NMA Enugu State Branch held on 18 November 2020, a decision was reached to hold a fresh election. Based on that decision, the Caretaker Committee subsequently rescheduled the election for today 28 November 2020.
