I'm sure that most people won't read this bit However, when asked what would happen to the respondents who admitted to have witnessed or partook in the bribery, Okebukola said, “We need the survey to get knowledge and data, so we may not be able to get the kind of evidence that can be used for prosecution. It's the anonymous bit that is the main reason why ICPC can't move on the case. Most research is done based on annonimity of the respondents. So, if ICPC wanted to investigate...all they have are statements on paper made by anonymous sources. Hardly the kind of evidence you can take to a judge. Also, there is the fact that the comments were made in the context of a research work, not a formal investigation. An example from abroad. In the early 197-0's a woman was murdered in Northern Ireland by a group of IRA terrorists on suspicion of working for the British government as a spy. Some thrity years later, a researcher who was researching the period had an audio confession made by someone involved in the murder. So, was it used to prosecute....no. There was the fact that all terrorists involved had gotten an amnesty a few years earlier...and then there was the fact that the comment was made in the context of a research work, with the promise that it would not be used to incriminate him. So, unless someone decides to break ranks and go to the ICPC to report about the corruption, with evidence, there is nothing ICPC can do , unless we are thinking they should arrest and torture some lawyers into making confessions...which won't be admissible in court anyway. 13 Likes 3 Shares |

Good job / survey. However all the gathered information must be analysed to help ICPC perform her functions better in the nearest future. The survey must contain information on how to stop or reduce corruption to lowest and also how to capture and expose corrupt lawyers and judges. 1 Like |

thesicilian: U think prosecuting people is easy? U have no clue U are talking about people who earn less than 150k a month that are mandated to prosecute individuals who looted billions of naira. It's from that ur 150k u will transport yourself to court, produce and file your processes, pay the investigating police officer to come and testify (cos if u don't give ipo t-fare he won't come to court and ur case will be thrown out) and sometimes even the police will bungle your case by either compromising or shoddy investigation. U face hardened criminals or highly connected politicians with zero security or financial stability and yet the public sit in the comfort of their homes pointing fingers and expecting you to do magic. Sometimes u convict a hardened criminal at trial court only for the case to be overturned on appeal. Guess who the criminal will go and attack? So let's be less judgmental and face reality. Govt is just wasting it's time saying it's fighting corruption when the people who are supposed to fight are hungry and uncatered for. 4 Likes |

thesicilian: you can say that again. this ones we have in Nigeria are worse for it. they take pride in prosecuting and sentencing those that stole banana, oranges, one legged fowl etc but make friends with those who's robe stinks, drench and drip of blood and corruption. bunch of charge and bail practitioner, judges lacking in discretion, very stereotyped bench of illegal gloominary, other shed light on cases they compound it. a judge reserves the right to lunch an independent investigation into a pending case before him or her but ours ain't professional to that standard. they are so backward than even our outdated laws. ON THE PART OF ICPC: ICPC can build a case from here, the research has given the insight into what is obtainable. when the presidency pulled the plug off the judisharing back then we wail against him, here we are today. the icpc should go ahead building cases from their research, investigate individual that might have been indicted during the research. they know how to obtain evidence if they want to (they were trained and paid for this). |
