US company General Electric has created a wind turbine that is so powerful that it can power a household for two full days with only one spin of its mighty blades.

That's great news, because we need to get going with creating as much clean and renewable energy as we possibly can before the ice caps melt and we all end up in more serious danger than we're already in.

These incredible wind-powered generators are part of a project called Vineyard Wind, which will be installed off the coast of Massachusetts on the eastern side of the USA. That project will utilise a number of these remarkable whirligigs, known as the GE Haliade X.

The GE Haliade X really is a remarkable bit of kit. It can generate a capacity of 13 megawatts (MW) which makes it the most powerful wind turbine in the world. Pretty impressive, and really important, too.

Speaking in a press statement at the end of last year, Vineyard Wind CEO Lars T. Pedersen explained just how important this development is. He said: "The selection of GE as our preferred turbine supplier means that a historic American company will play a vital role in the development of the first commercial scale offshore wind power in the US.

"This is a huge moment not only for the future of our project but also for the future of an industry that is poised for exponential growth in the coming decades."

Whilst these types of large off-shore wind farms are commonplace in the UK and Europe, these machines will be much larger and more powerful over in the USA.

This is great news and I hope it will not be the last, because we and our planet need more of these advanced technologies, we need renewable energy because our demand for energy will not go away. We can’t power a civilization long-term with finite energy sources like fossil fuels, doing that is just a stepping stone to developing long-term solutions. Sooner or later the fossil fuels will just get too hard to reach and expensive to extract, and then you’ve got to switch whether you want to or not. Luckily though we’re pretty good at solar energy now and continue to study it and improve its production. Also, the faster we switch to solar energy, the more resources we will have left and the less we will pollute our planet when getting energy from other sources.

Such a great energy generated in one spin.
