Chinese Roots Lie in Africa, Research Says

Most of the population of modern China--one-fifth of all the people living today--owes its genetic origins to Africa, an international scientific team said today in research that undercuts any claim that modern humans may have originated independently in China.

In the search for human origins, in which political beliefs and pride of place can figure as prominently as fossil evidence, the genetic findings dramatically illustrate the intricate weave of prehistoric migrations and human evolution, the scientists said.

Published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study is the product of the Chinese Human Genome Diversity Project, a consortium of seven major research groups in the People’s Republic of China, and the Human Genetics Center at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. It was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

The group used the advanced tools of DNA analysis to create detailed genetic profiles of 28 of China’s official population groups, which comprise more than 90% of the country’s population...

“Populations from East Asia always derived from a single lineage, indicating the single origins of those populations,” the researchers said. “It is now probably safe to conclude that modern humans originating in Africa constitute the majority of the current gene pool in East Asia,” they said.

Don't Know about their origin, but what I know is that the Chinese are almost totally the same with Africans in terms of traditional cultural outlook. And this to me is the main reason they easily assimilate here, even in the African villages when they have serious jobs/work to do. The little differences you notice in the way they behave mostly came as a result of the cultural revolution. The Chinese treasure family connection like Africans, respect elders like Africans, maintain traditional stratification tthat recognizes the male child the same way we do, their culture conceeds to the man as the head of the family the same way traditional African families do. They like going back to their hometowns during the Chinese new year. Infact during the Chinese new year, their cities are as empty as say Eastern Nigeria cities during the Christmas or New year's celebrations..

In some places, when they have the ceremony for the dead, they will cook foods and keep sumptuous dishes outside during the night so that their dead ones will "come and eat" in the night! When you buy a new apartment, the elders from the village will come and do a particular dance and invoke the spirits for protection and you have to cook for them very sumptuous dishes, which everybody will eat and drink and the biggest dish cooked with a whole chicken, will then be left overnight at the center of the house for the spirits to "come and chop"! Together with apples and burning incense etc.. More like house warming/car warming in Nigeria.. They have many many traditional beleifs and practices that will make you think you are in Africa sometimes if you stay with them long time..

I must say I'm surprised the Chinese still retain some of those clearly African practices which even many ethnic groups in Africa have long abandoned, such as leaving food outside overnight for the gods to eat, etc. I mean, you can't get more African than that!

I guess we learn something new everyday.
