Lordsagna:

but defence chief is a general and army chief is a lieutenant general.... meaning the general can command the lieutenant general and has influence to command troops over army chief because of his rank.

In a sane country where the military go all out to recruit human beings into their various units. Don't forget that part.

stop all this lies na. why then is he a general, a civilian would have had the job if so. remember that buratai rank is lower than olusakin

Oga go and read about General Manman Vatsa's coup. During his trial, one of his point of defense was that the position he occupied at the time of the coup planning he had no troops under his command so could not have successfully planned a coup. Head of army medical corp, TRADOC, accounting etc would be generals but do not have troops under them to mobilize or deploy as it suites them unlike a brigade commander. It doesn't mean that that they don't have military aids around them but these aids could be withdrawn or redeployed by their units at any time.

Chief of defence staff is senior, as a four star general.

But make no mistake about it. The chief of army staff has more power. He has troop command. Especially in this nepotistic govt, he is the most powerful man in security circles today

You are allowed to be as powerful/powerless as they want you to be.

The CDS is superior and is supposed to be more powerful. But under this Buhari , the CDS is barely visible.Burutai wields far more powers than Olonishakin.

Alex Badeh,Danjuma,Abacha were very powerful as CDS.
Buhari is Just too tribalistic and has thus allotted more powers to the COAS

so the chief of defense staff sounds to you like an army medical officer that has no combatants or fighting divisions under him. buratai and the remaining two chiefs are his assistants and report to him.

A brief background to the creation of the CDS position.

In 1979 the outgoing Obasanjo led military administration decided to replace the retiring COAS, Gen TY Danjuma with Gen Alani Akinrinade.

However so after the new civilian government came into office, the decided to replace Gen Akinrinade (for obvious reasons).

They therefore decided to “elevate” him to CDS and was then replaced Gen Jalo as COAS.

Gen Akinrinade then retired from the military shortly after he was appointed CDS.

I am not trying to belittle his office but Buratai and the other military chiefs can mobilize and deploy men to different locations but chief of defense can not.

The COD comes in when the is a combined operations between the services. Say if there is combined action by both the army and navy who takes command? Such action will be coordinated by the CDS but has no direct control over individual services
