The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved a bill extending the retirement age for teachers in the country from 60 years to 65 years.

The FEC, during its first meeting of the year 2021, presided over by President Muhammadu Buhari, on Wednesday, approved the bill; Harmonized Retirement Age for Teachers Bill, 2021, to be sent to the National Assembly for its consideration and possible approval.

The bill also seeks to give legal backing to new measures by the current administration to enhance the teaching profession in the country.

If approved by the lawmakers, the retirement age of teachers will move from 60 years to 65 while the years of service will also move from 35 to 40.

Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, who disclosed this to correspondents at the end of the council meeting, said some highlights of the bill include the introduction of bursary award, special rural posting allowances and other measures to attract the best brains to the profession.

CIVIL AND PUBLIC SERVANTS WHO WERE FORCEFULLY RETIRED,WHO HAD ONE MORE YEAR OUT IF THE 35YEARS, TO SERVE BUT WERE FORCEFULLY RETIRED BY PAST MILITARY STATE GOVERNORS SHOULD GATHER THEMSELVES,GET GOOD LAWYERS AND SUE THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT AND THE MILITARY.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS.

THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD PAY UP THE BALANCE BECAUSE THEY WERE SHORTCHANGED.

teachers don't have to retire, except they're tired. A very serious government would rather employ more teachers.

What is this one saying, which experience are you talking about? Most of these old people are in the public sector and even SSCE certificate holders in private schools are more effective than them, you can never compare the products of a mushroom school with SSCE certificate holders with University graduates in the same locality. Private schools are always better.

Does it also apply to state teachers?

Buhari government is very dumb

Despite my criticisms of this government and the many weaknesses of this administration, Buhari is laying slow, steady but SURE foundation for this country.

Buhari doing everything to put a smile on the face of the forgotten Nigerians.
God bless you Mr President. History will be kind to you.

I do hope a larger percentage of teachers would still be very effective by the time they attain the new retirement age.
