House,
I am about to venture into poultry farming with my best friend. We intend stocking 1000 layers. Presently we are constructing our coop. I intend to reach out to poultry farmers and other enthusiasts with this thread. i will be uploading pictures as we go along. Comments and criticisms are welcome.

based on your site location and the type of structure your are building, I will advise you to turn the project to broiler farm, it will be cheaper for you, with that structure i can not see you succeed in layer operation do to lack of adequate layer environmental control managements, unless you want to turn the operation to a free range layer option that require 5 times additional manpower and resources. when you are starting poultry farming in a small scale like yours its better to start with broiler knowing that every 28-45 days you will pull the birds without risking more on decease.

Thanks for the comment. i will think about it. The reason i want to start with layers is because eggs are easier to market than broilers. When u grow broilers u hardly get individuals to buy and those dat buy wholesale give ridiculously cheap prices. The only time one can make a good profit is during festive periods like sallah, Xmas etc. As i said earlier , i will give it thot and try it with maybe 200 birds.

Hope you have enough cash to feed the chicks for some month before they start shitting eggs for you.
That can be capital intensive.

You should have done all the budget/project analysis by now.

Re: Starting A Poultry Farm (a Blog) by Hindsight(f): 2:55pm On Apr 13, 2011
This is one of the entrances, we partitioned the building into two halves so that we would have 500 birds on each side (we're told dat it would be easier to manage).

Hi all

@Fidelo will get back to u with the dimensions.

@Blink I think it would take a 1000 birds.

@ Pleep thanks.

I would have posted the completed pix of the structure but the guys handling the floors did a "NASTY" job yesterday and the whole place was looking horrible today sad. So as we are going to do the floors again. lipsrsealed . Anyways we arent going to let that dampen our spirits.

I like what you are doing, i have a dream to start a poultry farm one day.

Since i'm busy with my tailoring work now, i would like my girl to go into it
instead of stockfish biz.
My question is how far can N300,000 go.
If you have any help you can send it to 08131332356.

For fear of disease outbreak, I prefer fish farming, and the labour involved is very little compared to poultry
