For a lot of people, the Covid pandemic was a wake-up call. The security of the corporate job was diminished so quickly, big and “steady” corporations let go of huge amounts of employees. Leaving them to face the truth they have somewhat tried to avoid. No job is safe. Even the rate race is a dangerous one. This realization also sparked creativity and inwardness. The hours at home, in quarantine, with no job and a lot of anxiety made people ask themselves important questions. Who am I? What do I really want to do? I know this led people to step away from the matrix and examine their life. In consequence, new businesses were born. Passions and hobbies became fulfilling full- time jobs. The path to personal freedom has begun. I have to say I am not against corporates I believe they are extremely valuable in helping the environment, community development, and creating workplaces for millions of people and families. With that being said, there are many individuals in our society that have always dreamed of building their own thing, having their own business, making a living through their art. And doing it their way. For these people, I have written several tactical tips that can help them escape the rat race, and go forward with their inner passions, so they can have a career they truly enjoy waking up to. *Find out what gets you excited . What activities give you energy instead of sucking away your energy. The moment you find a profession that you perceive as meaningful and plays on your passion and strengths, work becomes play. As Richard Branson said: “I don’t see work as work and play as play, it is all living”. *Start working on a side business. Structure it the way you want. At first, you will probably need to invest some extra after- work hours. But it will be worth it. If you want to become a news broadcaster don’t just wait around for some TV Channel to hire you. Go and create a podcast, a YouTube channel, invest in your LinkedIn profile. This will get you going and increase the chances of you getting the job you want (don’t be surprised if you end up making more money working for yourself, and deciding to work as a freelancer). *Manage your time efficiently based on what you conceive as important . The biggest time wasters are: overthinking, unproductive meetings, long commutes, and an obsession with small unimportant details and tasks. Once you eliminate that, it becomes clear what actions you need to take to achieve the most productive impact. As Tim Ferris said it well: “Doing less meaningless work, so that you can focus on things of greater personal importance, is not laziness. This is hard for most people to accept because our culture tends to reward personal sacrifice instead of personal productivity”. *Live on your own terms, Play by your own rules. Design a lifestyle that fits you and gives you the space you need to go after your goals and values . Don’t get dragged into the Instagram make-believe society delusion. Where, as Tyler Durden the fictional outlaw philosophy character from “Fight Club” said: “We buy things we don’t need to impress people we don’t like”. *Embrace the fear. Chartering into the unknown can be scary. Many books and philosophies ranging from ancient to modern have been made about fear. The one that impacted and made sense to me the most was the one Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) has to offer. In ACT, the objective is not to beat fear or eliminate fear. It is about accepting fear and learning to go after your goals and values while taking the fear with you. Making room for unpleasant moments of anxiety and stress instead of repressing or avoiding them. It is not about comfort; it is about meaning. Like adventurer Bear Grylls said: “Being brave isn’t the absence of fear. Being brave is having that fear and finding a way through it”. I hope these several tips can help you go after what you truly want to do. So you can have a more meaningful and enjoyable time in your profession. https://blogs.timesofisrael.com/waking-up-to-a-meaningful-career/
