The Kano State Police Command has arrested a senior official with the state's Hisbah board after he was allegedly caught with a married woman in a hotel.

According to Freedom Radio Kano, the official was arrested in the Sabon Gari area of the city. His name was not immediately mentioned, but he was described only as police chief when the matter featured on Freedom FM’s popular magazine programme “Inda Ranka”.

According to the station, Kano Hisbah Commander, Muhammed Haruna, while describing the incident as unfortunate, said a two-man committee had been set up to investigate the matter.

Hisbah officers regularly arrest unmarried people caught in hotels, presumably for sexual activities, as part of their enforcement of the Sharia.

Established to enforce Sharia, Hisbah recently banned stylish haircuts, sagging of trousers, playing of music at social events by disk jockeys and seized tricycles from riders for adorning them with pictures considered to be obscene and against the tenents of Islam in some states.

Hisbah also banned commercial motorcycle and tricycle riders from carrying two women at a time.

This was in addition to other unusual directives reeled out by the Islamic police.

This hypocrite may have in time past arrested many prostitutes and destroyed their brothel, telling you it is Haram. He may have commanded the destruction of many crates of beer, saying it Haram. He may arrested people for dressing mode and head style, saying oh yes we are holy, this your dressing is Haram. Etc. This is the hypocrisy the all submerge themselves in.

Ordinarily, I would laugh at the hypocrisy of the North and Hisbah as a sham but it is more disturbing that the police is being used as an instrument of religion in this case. The police DPO who was caught drinking/committing adultery sometime ago wasn't arrested by the police but by Hisbah. Why then is the police being used as a religious tool 'just' because a hypocrite fornicated or committed adultery? Why can't Hisbah arrest him? What will the police charge him for; adultery or fornication, according to section what of the 1999 constitution?

The operations of the police in the North is somewhat very different from that of those in the South and at this right, it won't be long before Hisbah starts arresting even non-Muslims who are found wanting. The systemic overlapping between Hisbah and the police in the North is something worth studying.

Sharia is gradually finding its two legs in Nigeria.
