At least 11 people were laid to rest on Sunday in the outcome of Friday’ s altercation between Hausa traders and Yoruba at Shasa Market in Akinyele Local Government Area, Oyo State.

Also, up to 5, 000 Hausa dealers, women and children ousted by the violence were still taking refuge at the dwelling of the Sarkin Shasa, Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture IITA, in Ibadan.

The Sarkin Sasa, who talked with Daily Trust, said 11 casualties were prepared for burial in his compound. A source in the Hausa community asserted 20 killed persons were buried at the Akinyele Graveyard in the state.

The burnt remains of 8 other people murdered during the crisis were still at the police station in the Shasha area, as of yesterday sunset.

” You can listen to the noise, they are still here, ” Alhaji Maiyasin confided Daily Trust by telephone. He said the refugees in his home were up to 3, 000.

A crisis flared on Thursday when a porter holding up a basket of tomatoes inadvertently pushed a Yoruba woman. The woman allegedly avenged and organised a group of Yoruba thugs to retaliate. The fight snowballed to Friday during which many people were murdered and dozens of shops, worship centres and houses engulfed.

One of our reporters detected that Hausa inhabitants at Mokola area of Ibadan, the biggest Hausa community in the state, were flocking for fear of chaos to the area.

Meanwhile, the inhabitants of Shasha on Sunday booed the governor of the state, Seyi Makinde, and his Ondo State partner, Rotimi Akeredolu, for Makinde’ s tardiness to visit the disturbed area.
