When people were trying to figure out how to address President Washington, they tried a few titles on for size like "Your Excellency". All of them ended up sounding like the man in charge should have a crown and scepter. That didn't sit well with either the President or Congress. They all just shrugged and agreed that "Mr. President" was accurate and respectful enough to do the job. So it has stood for every president since that time. So why do we still address our presidents as Mr President |

It is just a courtesy protocol and not in any way backed by the law!!! You can give the president any reasonable title as you so wishes as far as you don't disrespect the honor attached. |
