Self learning is the modern day form of learning. Not that it has replaced traditional and instructional learning, but it has supplemented it and with some great results. Self learning has proven to be effective, convenient, and fast, thanks to the rise of the internet. Nowadays, students can learn lot of things just by a simple Google search, social media classes, YouTube videos, and by simply reading instructional materials.
Self learning as the new form of learning has equipped students and anyone with skills that are relevant to their academic performance and daily activities as well. It is an important skill for students at all levels as they journey through education and beyond to adulthood, building independence and ability to progress without reliance on a teacher. Traditional, instructional learning has a place in school, however, working out an answer or solving a problem by yourself is not only more rewarding, it also helps to solidify the learning. Therefore, it is advised that students be encouraged to asses their own work as it will enable them to gain a better understanding of what they are best at and what they need to work harder on. If self learning, editing and reviewing of works is practiced by undergraduate students on a daily basis, they will soon become familiar with the process of self-assessment and will also be a plus to their academic pursuit.
SELF LEARNING
Self learning is a process by which individuals take the initiative, with or without the assistance of others, in diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying human and material resources for learning, and evaluating outcomes.
Self learning also involves the ability to manage learning tasks without having them directed by others. They are skills necessary for effective lifelong learning and are one of many learning skills students are expected to develop in school as it will help them improve in their academic performance.
HOW TO IMPROVE SELF LEARNING
1) BE OVERLY CURIOUS ABOUT NEW IDEAS
One of the ways to improve self learning is by overly been curious about new ideas. When you start becoming too curious and the desire to create new ideas grows higher by the day, it is expected that you will seek for it and how to develop and nurture it that way you are improving your ability of self learning. People who are not curios about things do not create new things or even come up with new ideas thereby dampening their ability of self learning and self development.
2) SET GOALS TO CREATE NEW OPPORTUNITIES
Another ways to improving self learning is to set goals that will create new opportunities. Self learning is a skill that should be encouraged to all because out of it can sprout out new opportunities that would be beneficial to both the creative director and the society at large. When you desire to create opportunities for yourself and the society, it will drive you to self learning which will eventually lead you to discovery of new opportunities.
3) DOWNLOAD RESEARCH MATERIALS TO AID YOU
In your journey to self learning, you can also make use of the internet by downloading some undergraduate project materials to aid you in self learning. There are lots of research materials online, you can search for materials that are in cognizance with whatever you want to know more or research on that way you get to learn and acquire more knowledge on your own without the help of anyone.
4) TRY TO CREATE SOMETHING OUT OF WHAT YOU HAVE LEARNT
Learning precedes practice. It is important that you put into practice whatever you have learnt in the course of self learning. Creating something pout of what you have learnt will be an everlasting memory to you as you will never lose such knowledge or skill.
5) HAVE A STUDY GROUP
Having a study group has shown to be highly beneficial to learning process. Group learning helps students to learn more. It also gives them the opportunity to make research on their own which is self learning and also make appropriate contributions to the study group.
