Former Head of State, General Abdusalami Abubakar (Rtd) has said negotiating with terrorists and bandits is not the best way to tackle insecurity.

Abubakar said this while speaking to newsmen after a meeting with the Nigerian Governors Forum in Minna.

He mentioned that the best way to solve Nigeria’s banditry and kidnapping problems is to ensure that the crimes are not committed in the first place.

While admitting that sometimes negotiations might be used to save the lives of kidnap victims, General Abdulsalami said Nigeria needs tight security that can checkmate the miscreants before they strike.

Speaking on the Kagara abduction, Abdulsalami said it will be unwise for anyone to, however, storm a hideout of bandits to rescue students.

“Even if anyone knows the location of students, it will be foolhardy to storm the place in a bid to fight and bring them back. In the process, some innocent lives will be lost.

He, however, advised the authorities to ensure that security is beefed up alongside an increase in manpower to forestall further occurrences.

“Nigeria’s security architecture is overstretched and the Police Force is underpopulated, hence the need for support from the citizens and an increase in manpower.

“Nigeria must go back to the time when brotherly love existed. Let us go back to when we were our brothers’ keeper,” Abdulsalami pleaded.

When you negotiate and give amnesty to a group of people who are driven by poverty, hunger and lack of employment etc, you have not solved the root problem in the first place. Extreme poverty prevalent in the land should be sincerely tackled by the Government. A gainfully employed youth sees no need to delve into crime.

Buhari lacks good leadership skills, the difference between him and gideon orkar is that he succeded where the latter failed, they were both trained to either shoot to kill or to maim. imagine that gumi is the president or a gov of a state in nigeria.

Mtwss. Peace ambassador says what. There's nothing to worry about negotiations is the best option.
We look to the future with unshakable confidence. We have passed through the hardest school known to men. We know that the untold sacrifices we have made cannot have been in vain, because we believe in supreme justice. What have we not done in past years? How we have toiled, how we have labored, always with but one end in view: Our nation! Millions have devoted their lives to it; hundreds and thousands have sacrificed them for it.

Providence has not led us along these amazing paths in vain. On the day that the Northern project was founded I recalled that our nation once gained immense victories. Then it became ungrateful, disunited, sinned against itself. Thereupon it was punished by Providence. We deserved our defeat. If a nation forgets itself as completely as the Northern nation did at that time, if it thinks that it can shake off all honor and all good faith, Providence can do nothing but teach it a hard and bitter lesson. But even at that time we were convinced that once our nation found itself again, once it again became industrious and honorable, once each individual Northern stood up for his nation first and not for himself, once he placed the interests of the community above his own personal interests, once the whole nation again pursued a great ideal, once it was prepared to stake everything for this ideal, the hour would come when the Lord would declare our trials at an end.

Intelligence is not the problem, Nigeria has the brains
Force is not the problem, the military is powerful
The will is not the problem, everyone have suffered enough

The real problem is religion. We are too religious to do what is right. If only those from the part of the country from which this bandits come from, can come out to openly condemn them and call for a halt, there would be a head way. But whether we like it or not, 90% of them agree with the activities of these bokoharam and bandits that is why they will always have a pool of their youths and children available for recruitment. The other 10% of them that don't agree with their activities are simply those who have been directly affected by their heinous crimes. But the remaining see it as a commendable religious cause. But the babarism of it will not allow them to openly speak up and support them on a few of the depraved ones like Sheik Gumi and Bauchi Governors.

a very bad move...negotiating and paying them would only increase insecurities bcoz they would go back to same vice after some weeks and it's bad for both short run and long run development planning
