think of it this way...you give someone land and put it in her name. Then you pay for tippers of sand and gravel, and 1000 blocks. Then somehow there is a disagreement, and you order the blocks, gravel and sand to be withdrawn from the land. This is a comparable situation. Just for explanation sake.

That is why in land dispute judgements you will hear something like, Mr A is the rightful owner of the land, Mr B please remove your structure. You can make your findings on this if you have any doubt.

It could be the lady want to take the matter to court hence he decide to demolish the house, because court would never ask him to rebuild the house, or the lady's name is what is on the document which may give the lady upper hand so as it is now nothing to judge.
