The federal government says Nigerians will have the option to pay to own millions of solar panels it plans for 5 million homes as part of its Economic Sustainability Plan (ESP).

The ESP was rolled out in 2020 in response to the economic crisis caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

To own a solar unit, there will be the option of paying N4,000 monthly for three years. That translates to N144, 000 a unit.

This was revealed in a statement issued by the Office of the Vice President on Thursday. It was not immediately clear what the other alternatives would be.

Vice President Yemi Osinbajo called the programme a “game-changer” in terms of providing jobs and expanding the use of renewable energy in the country.

The off-grid project is financed by UBA, Sterling Bank, First Bank and Fidelity Bank and its implementation will be driven by the Rural Electrification Agency, REA.

The statement said Mr Osinbajo spoke about the initiative during a virtual engagement with stakeholders involved in the implementation of the Solar Power Naija Initiative on Thursday.

He was quoted to have said, “Our Solar Home System was designed to be a game-changer in the renewable energy space, in other words, it is not just a programme to provide off-grid power alone, but one that creates opportunities for the development of the local capacities in the assembly, manufacture and even maintenance of equipment.”

“We have seen quite a bit of interest already from international and local players across the off-grid solar value chain, there is indeed a lot of interest that we are seeing,” Mr Osinbajo said, according to the statement signed by his assistant, Laolu Akande.

The government hopes the plan will service 25 million Nigerians who are not connected to the national grid.

With regards to ownership, Mr Osinbajo said, “Under the scheme, there is an option of outright ownership by beneficiaries possibly at a rough estimate of N4, 000 per month for a period of 3 years.”

“Also, there is the value addition to the economy in the area of job creation for at least 250, 000 persons and the ramping up of local content in solar equipment manufacturing systems installation and maintenance,” it said.

“The banks that are keyed into this have already shown a great deal of interest and leadership in this particular area and we commend them for what they have done so far. We hope that we will be able to work closely with them as we go ahead. And same with all of the assemblers, manufacturers of off-grid systems.”

Mr Osinbajo called on commercial banks to support the federal government’s move towards developing the local capacity for the entire solar energy sector.

“As you know, the CBN is committed to this, and we hope that this partnership will be one that we will be able to leverage to achieve great things in the coming months.

“Please leverage on the funding opportunities that have been offered and all of our internal people are willing to work to ensure that you succeed,” he stated.

So what's the power output of a unit of the solar panel?

A solar panel just convert the solar energy, you need other associated accessories which might even be more expensive.

Besides, solar panels that can comfortably power an average home with 2 AC, Fridge, and few low power consuming equipment can't be less than 500k.

Yes, I said it.

Great move.

Less than what many Nigerians pay per month for electricity.

5 Million household is a lot of solar panels, how I wish there's a solar panel manufacturer in Nigeria to take advantage of this program.

144,000 per unit ke? Ordinary a good 200ah deep cycle cost more than N144,000, before we even start talking about the inverters, charge controller, solar panels and accessories, and then cost of installation

Maybe the solar set up is just for charging phone and running a few lights.

Are you talking about subsidy? Because the cost of single items like battery and even inverter (pure sine wave inverter) can be more that N144 000. Except you don't intend to run inductive loads like compressors and ac fans.

I still don't know why Africa is still getting deceived that Solar is the way for for Electricity just because we have abundance of sunlight.

Any deep thinker and non conformist will realize that it's all a scam

Solar should be the most expensive source of electricity

Just two days ago they said they want to reintroduce the toll Gate fee

Now they want us to pay for solar panel

If I understand English properly, this means Nigerians will pay for their roads to be constructed

Will also pay to have light

We will also pay tax to the government

What then are government doing for us then?

If we will pay for all this, that means we won't be paying tax

Funny government spinning the same hogwash.
Show us the model of what you're talking about so we understand what you're saying.

How come the conceivers of this idea didn't consider the promotion of local production of solar panels and batteries as the driving force of this idea? Won't that do more for the economy?

plaindealer:

You mean 5 million Nigerians shouldn't receive, benefit from this scheme or even get electricity via this solar program until we convince other Nigerian to start manufacturing solar panels and batteries? When and how long are the interested Nigerians going to conceive, finance, built the manufacturing plants and start selling to Nigerians and in the meantime, we should juts sit down and look and do nothing?

What kind of backward thinking is this?

It's like saying we should not buy cars or start flying in planes until we start manufacturing cars or build airplanes.

Some of you just criticize as if it is by force toc criticize.
Those targeted are not on the national grid which means that this isn't an emergency that they wont calm down to make decisions that positions country to get maximum benefit from the policy. Just like we shouldn't at a time of crisis be borrowing to build railways to Niger and at the same time be selling national assets to fund budget. Misplaced priorities!

What's more is that that ERP document isn't new. So, why is it still being spoken of like news?

What's tha business?

Owning a system that after 3 years the batteries must have began to suffer from reduced backup time.

It's a good initiative but the capacity of the system will tell. I just hope the government will improve our locals that can construct Inverters, Solar Panels and if possible venture into production of Batteries.
