The National Inland Waterways Authority has expressed interest to engage the services of Akewa Colmar Terminal Limited to move containers from Lagos ports to Onitsha River Port via Burutu Port in Delta State.

According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the General Manager, Corporate Affairs of NIWA, Jibril Darda’u, titled, ‘NIWA to engage ACTL to move cargoes from Lagos ports’, the move is an attempt to decongest Lagos ports.

Darda’u explained that the idea of hauling containers via Burutu Ports to Onitsha River port was to deliberately avoid the two small bridges of Gbarekolo and Bumandi.

This is because the two bridges are too tiny and shallow for sea moving badges and vessels to ply through, the statement said.

The Managing Director of NIWA, Dr George Moghalu, disclosed that NIWA was targeting about 1,000 containers to be hauled per trip from Lagos ports to Onitsha River Port within the maximum duration of four days.

He also added that NIWA was engaging the Nigeria Ports Authority and other stakeholders to facilitate the commencement of the cargo haulage.

Last year, NIWA conducted a trial movement of containers from Onne to Onitsha River with the aim of decongesting Lagos ports in the first quarter of 2021.

I'm sure that this is of zero benefit to the Igbos. If it was beneficial, it would have been moved to the north. Balderdash.

Surely anything to reduce the population nightmare in Lagos must be welcome? Selfish political and business leasders who sit in their fortresses on the island, and gain financially from all the things that make parts of Lagos an overpopulated hell, will not like this but things like this must be welcomed by long suffering ordinary people who make up more than 95% of the population.

Tribalism and nepotism is the main problem withholding our development..

If not their should be little or no problem to worry about.

Lagos
River state
Anambra
Calarba
Akwaibom
Delta
Bayelsa
Kogi.

These states have large water bodies.. If FG meant well, these places will help ease the problems at ports..But hell no, we are all focused on Lagos. There by making life extremely difficult for Inhabitants in Lagos.

Smh..this country nawa.
