Islands conjure dreams of paradise: an escape from the rat race and a perfect patch of sand where you can relax under rustling palms and gaze at a serene blue sea.

But not all islands are created the same. The beauty of some is defined more by the sea that surrounds them, which can captivate connoisseurs with its crystalline clarity and thriving coral kingdoms.

Other islands feature luxuriant jungles and velvety peaks, and some enchant travelers with their cultural jewels. Whether it's sublime beaches, stunning topography, or exotic cultures you seek, these islands lie far from the workaday clamor but close to creature comforts.

What is an Island?
An Island is a land mass (smaller than a continent) that is surrounded by water. There are three types of Island: Continental Island; Oceanic Islands; and Tropical Island. Here, we are giving a list of the Major Islands in Nigeria that will help the readers for enhancing general knowledge.

There are parts of Nigeria closer to the water and provide for areas that have Islands. Places like Lagos, Rivers and other lower ends of the Niger-Delta with close access to rivers and oceans, allow for the natural or artificial formation of Islands. Some of the islands in Nigeria are included below:

Abagbo Island

Abagbo Island is the last island on the outskirt of Lagos. The island has been perturbed by its riverine area, which has caused less than stellar improvements in terms of modernisation and seemingly slow pace of development. The ex-governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, took up a project to develop and modernize riverine areas like Abagbo

Andoni Island

Andoni is a Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is at Ngo Town. It has an area of over 233 km2 and a population of over 311,500 at the last census.
The Obolo (Andoni) People, also known as Andoni tribe, is part of the proposed Obolo State. Obolo people are found in Rivers and Akwa Ibom States of Nigeria. They are the largest Ijaw sub-ethnic group with strong historical relations with Oron, Ohafia, Ogoloma, Ido and Ibeno people of Niger Delta in Nigeria.
The Obolo people, put together, occupies the longest stretch of the Nigeria Mangrove Coastline Belt which also houses the largest oil and gas deposits in the Gulf of Guinea. The Andoni people refer to God as Awaji or Owaji

Banana Island

Banana Island is a man-made island in Lagos State, Nigeria that is slightly curved in shape – like a banana. It is located in the Lagos Lagoon and is connected to Ikoyi Island by a dedicated road which is linked to the existing road network near Parkview Estate. The island was constructed by the Lebanese-Nigerian Chagoury Group in partnership with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing and is considered to be on par with the Seventh Arrondissement in Paris, La Jolla in San Diego, and Tokyo's Shibuya and Roppongi neighbourhoods.

Bonny Island

Located at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean on the Bight of Bonny, the island of Bonny serves as the seat of a traditional state known as the Kingdom of Bonny.
Bonny was founded by a priest king known as Ndoli. He (as well as his successors Opuamakuba and Alagbariye) were the leaders of the founding group of Bonny Island. The virgin lands and territories of the island kingdom were settled about or before 1400AD. Asimini, the fourth king (but the first one to be crowned), founded a dynasty that went on to provide most of the kingdom's monarchs.

Brass Island

Brass Island is an island in the Niger Delta of Nigeria. It is the site of Twon-Brass, the head of the Brass, Nigeria local government area in southern Bayelsa State. It is known for the traditional costume of its inhabitants, heavily influenced by British colonialist’s Edwardian era outfits

Parrot Island Akwa Ibom

Parrot Island is a island and is located in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria. The estimate terrain elevation above seal level is 15 meters.

Ogogoro island

Gberefu Island

Gberefu Island also known as Point of No Return is a populated historical island located in Badagry, a town and local government area of Lagos State, South-Western Nigeria.[1] Symbolized by two poles slightly slanted towards each other and facing the Atlantic Ocean, the island was a major slave port after it was opened in 1473 during the Trans Atlantic Slave Trade era.[2] According to Nigerian historians, as many as 10,000 slaves were believed to have been shipped to the Americas between 1518 and 1880 from the island

Iddo Island

Iddo Island is a district in Lagos Mainland LGA of Lagos. Opposite Lagos Island, Iddo used to be an island, but due to landfill, is now part of the rest of Lagos Mainland.[1] Iddo Island is connected to Lagos Island by the Eko Bridge and the Carter Bridge. Prior to the landfill, Iddo was connected to the Lagos Mainland by the Denton Bridge, named after Sir George Chardin Denton, former Lieutenant Governor of the Colony of Lagos.[2][3] Iddo is home to the Lagos Terminus and was the first and only place in Nigeria to host a tram service - linking Lagos Island through Carter Bridge.

Ikoyi

Ikoyi is the most affluent neighborhood of Lagos, located in Eti-Osa Local Government Area.[1][2] It lies to the northeast of Obalende and adjoins Lagos Island to the west, and at the edge of the Lagos Lagoon. Popular with the extreme upper class residents of Nigerian society, Ikoyi is arguably one of the wealthiest communities within Nigeria.

The area that makes up Ikoyi was originally a continuous land mass with Lagos Island, until it was separated from by MacGregor canal, a narrow waterway that was dug by the British colonial government. This canal has now been built over or filled so that the island is fused with Lagos Island once again. It has been called in derogatory terms as the "Beverly Hills by the slum" or the Belgravia of Lagos.
