Some gunmen in Abia State reportedly got more than what they bargained for after a gun duel with soldiers on Wednesday morning.

In the last one month, many security operatives have been shot dead in different across the southern part of the country.

Based on the development, police checkpoints have been dismantled in many areas in the states where security operatives are under attack.

On Wednesday, soldiers from 144 Battalion of the Nigerian Army in Abia, came under attack at Ariaria junction, along the Enugu–Port Harcourt expressway.

After the gun battle, at least 16 gunmen, who are suspected to be members Eastern Security Network (ESN), were killed.

Residents of the area told our correspondent that the gunmen, numbering about 30, engaged the soldiers at their checkpoint.

The soldiers were said to have gathered intelligence before the gunmen struck.

“The soldiers who were fully prepared positioned themselves in strategic places and wait for them. As soon as the gunmen arrived, they opened fire, but the soldiers responded,” a resident said.

However, there are conflicting reports about the number of casualties; while some residents said 16 persons were killed, among them, a soldier, a top military source in Aba said only 11 gunmen were killed and there was no casualty on the side of the army.

“No soldier was killed, but we killed 11 of the gunmen. I assure the public that there was no casualty on the side of the soldiers.” he said.

The Abia State Government commended the soldiers for their gallantry, pledging its commitment to the protection of lives and properties.

Commissioner for Information, Chief John Okiyi Kalu, who stated this, warned youths of the state not to put themselves in harm’s way by attacking security agents under any guise.

“It is a good development; we welcome every necessary measure to protect the good people of Abia state. We call on our young men and women not to put themselves in harm’s way by attacking security agents under any guise. We also urge them not to allow themselves to be used by politicians for any reason to cause insecurity. Abia state government will do everything possible to protect law-abiding citizens without fear.”

So the Nigerian Army has adopted IPOB/ESN strategy of calling the police killers unknown gunmen? grin

Let us not hear anyone call UN, EU, FIFA, UEFA etc as the "unknown gunmen" are being fed their own medicine.

He who lives by the gun, dies by the gun.

Brilliant strategy from the Nigerian Army.

For as long as the terrorists brand themselves as "unknown gunmen", every one of them wasted should continue to be referred to as "unknown victims" until they're wiped out completely.

We don't want to hear 'ween' from any ipob terrorist or social activists cool.

Honestly, the whole thing is turning into a joke and comedy. The army claimed they didn't kill any ESN but the unknown gunmen? Hello, in SE? There is a game plan and I think they are trying to prevent the international body from something hence the silent killings and the tag ' the unknown gunmen ' not the ESN?

A wise and intelligent person can detect what's happening here, in the secret. wink

They've come to stay but they chose to go about it applying the same ESN strategy. Hello?? Do you feel me

“People we know are attacking police stations and you say they are unknown Gunmen. The truth is, we know who they are. Are they attacking police stations in Rivers? No!, that's because I made sure they were completely flushed out of Rivers State. They are no longer here in Rivers. As long as I remain the governor of this state, no one, group or tribe will attack anyone or police officers.”

The terrorists are known. In this era of bvn, GSM registration, advanced phone call monitoring softwares,GPS tracking, etc you can only run from government, you can't hide and h9dr for ever especially when government has had enough of your nuisance.

IPOB miscreant will soon come with their "the people killed are not ESN" mantra. Anyway whocares as long as the military will keep on wasting the bastards ..

I like the Army report saying they engaged "unknown gunmen" grin, since they are unknown gunmen there would be no public outcry or calling for international attention.

Aboki terrorist apparently its conspicuous enough to see your military can't even get their "FACTS" straight. On one hand they claimed to have raided the camp of the ESN, and then at the flip of a coin claimed the supposed ESN gunmen attacked their checkpoint... I know stupidity and the low IQ syndrome resonates with the average Aboki subhuman, but at least I would expect you to be a lot bit smarter than I give you credit for!
