Ol boy, this is by no means near a good news.

Serious countries left extractive industry centuries ago. Migrated to industrial production, then hitech production. But here we are still talking about selling raw cocoa for almost free.

You export a raw bag of cocoa at N20,000. White man refines it at the cost of N10,000. Sells the byproducts (cocoa drink, chocolate etc) at N200,000.

White man makes N170,000 profit from your N20,000 years of sweat.

Extractive production impoverishs a nation.

As a matter of urgency, we must learn to add value to our raw materials, be it gold, diamond, crude oil or cash crops like cocoa and cotton.

The cocoa processing machine costs less than USD5k. Look it up on Alibaba. It's 1. Low iq 2. Love for foreign currency.

Exporting to another African state would have been better than exporting to the United States.

If this raw material can be processed in Nigeria, it would create thousands of jobs and put money in people's pockets.

It doesn't cost much to process it it Nigeria. It's greed for USD that motivates these exports....but it's a short sighted approach.... cocoa processing machine costs less than USD5000 and they would make more usd exporting chocolate, cocoa butter. Another case of short sightedness of people who seek immediate gratification.

Just a lie. US won't take cocoa seed from Nigeria. Cocoa that is not from a managed forest goes to Asia.

Secondly, this is a huge shame. No value addition, nothing. So sad that the pathetic government are in support of this.

You mean the man lied and they faked the manifest and destination and the Cocoa is actually not going to the US but to Asia instead?

The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: mineral fuels ($4.4 billion), special other (returns) ($80 million), oilseeds and oleaginous fruits (plants) ($15 million), fertilizers ($11 million), and cocoa ($10 million).

https://ustr.gov/countries-regions/africa/nigeria

This trade report is from the US trade office, the US government so please tell us exactly the managed cocoa field in Nigeria the $10 million cocoa that Nigeria exported to the US in 2019 alone came from.

So, the liar here is obviously, you.

All you did was letting us know that you have personal issues with the government, issues that have nothing to do with facts and even with this topic.

We already have many of them...
Nigeria has had cocoa processors for almost 40 years (ie, before most of us were born).

And what's been done by the appropriate authorities to offtake all locally produced cocoa, in other to ensure that we keep the wealth at home?

Or are the processing plants not functioning.

Mr. Facts don't be daft. I have no issues with your country. The declined imports shows that US has lost interest in sustainable harvest. Can we have the data for 2020?

Although, this might be bigger than you to absorb but keep your stupidity far.

Do you know how much cocoa cost per ton? Let's see if the US government will allow this untraceable harvest export.

Wish everyone safe deals.

Lastly, the only coy involved in sustainable cocoa is OLAM

....but it was kind of daft to conclude that the man and the authority lied that the cocoa they shipped went to Asia instead of America especially, making such claims without facts.

Do you have any shipping documentation showing that the cocoa that left Calabar went to Asia instead of USA?

Also, after your claim that the US only accepts cocoa from a well-managed field, you need to show us the field well-managed field in Nigeria that the $10 million cocoa that the US imported from Nigeria came from.

If you can not show us proof that the cocoa went to Asia and not the US, then, you are a lair.

People like you just lie and make flawed claims that you can not back up with facts.

Cocoa is a valuable export product and we need to do more to ramp up cocoa export for valuable foreign exchange.

What other countries do to make money and build a strong economy shouldn't be a bad thing when it comes to Nigeria.

What happens after offtaking the cocoa for local use? Rot away or force Nigerians to take them for processing?

How many Nigerians and local entrepreneurs are in the cocoa business or even willing to enter the business?

Are Nigerian cocoa users lamenting over the absence of cocoa locally?

There's more than enough cocoa on the ground for local use, but it is up to Nigerians to enter and create that market and entrepreneurial environment, something that the government can not force us to do, it is up to us to see the potential and access it for wealth and success.

Please comprehend.

I said OLAM does sustainable harvesting... maybe TETRA TEAK might be on the list as well but not this company that just exported the said 7000tons.

No problem. Wish the company best of luck. Thank you

...but comprehension failed you already. The issue is you lying that the cocoa shipment from Calabar went to Asia and not the US without proof.

OLAM is your own self-created diversion which I'm not interested in.

What's OLAM got to do with your initial claim that the cocoa shipment went to Asia instead of the USA as stated by the shipper?

What's OLAM got to do with you showing us documented proof that the shipment went to Asia and not to the USA?

I was never in any discussion with you about the OLAM so no need for the bait and switch, the issue is you claiming that the shipper and the government lied about the shipment.

You need to stop lying and just show us proof that this shipment as asserted by you went to Asia instead of the USA.

You are a daft fellow.

There is sustainable harvest and unsustainable harvest. Nigeria is a high risk nation that fails in due diligence harvesting. The EU, US, Australia and Japan has all frown on illegal or unsustainable forest products harvest. Only Asia and few other countries still accept forest products that are not harvested legally.

Please stop quoting and go learn.

You can ask the US authorities for further lecture.

And if you doubt me, confirm from the US trade. Thank you.

Long story short, you lied and still can not show us documented proof that the shipper sent cocoa from Calabar port to Asia and not the US as stated by the FG and the shipper.

What is daft is you going on and on with lies and claims that you can not substantiate with proof.

You are entitled to your personal opinion and your made-up anti-government conspiracy theories, not facts.

So sad.

Now this is not about this present government or anything. It is about Nigeria and any other country that is not practicing SFM. It falls on the government to have sustainable forest policy in place to sustained forest products. This is what is called Sustainable Forest Management.

PLEASE I am not a politician nor someone that lives in Nigeria. I am just telling you facts. Okay accepted. Those goods are going to the US. Is that okay with you?

Thank you

We can end this back and forth right now, just show us proof that the cocoa shipment from Calabar port is going not Asia and not to the US as claimed by the shipper and the port.

It's very simple, just back up your claims with documented proof instead of anti-government sentiments and conspiracy theories.

This is among the reason why Dollar is rising, many Nigerian farmers prefer exporting raw materials to other countries since they knew that the return is huge.

They keep telling us that ports outside Lagos are neglected and not functional, but huge ships are sailing in and out of Eastern ports, even shippers shipping cocoa from the SW are taking advantage of Eastern ports.

I'd love to see shippers from other parts of Nigeria to start looking beyond Lagos ports
Great post. smiley

The Calabar Port is a River Port
NOT a Sea Port as indicated in
the original post.

All the Eastern Ports and Warri are
River Ports NOT Sea Ports, and the rivers the are sited along have to be constantly dredged at an expensive cost yearly in order to be profitable.

All the best.
