John Campbell says it is unlikely for Nigeria to get technical and financial support from the US in its war against terror until the country addresses alleged human rights abuses by security forces.

Campbell, a former US ambassador to Nigeria, made the comment on Friday at the maiden edition of Grow Nigeria Conversation themed: ‘Reversing the Flourishing Economy of Kidnapping and Banditry: Immediate & long-term solutions’.

Amnesty International and other organisations had indicted the military of abuses under Nigerian and international laws in the course of its operations.

President Muhammadu Buhari had said Nigeria would be looking forward to the support of a Joe Biden-led United States in the war against terrorism.

Campbell, however, said US laws strictly prohibit the American government from providing technical expertise to security forces accused of human rights violations.

According to him, the allegations pose “a huge barrier to a more cordial relationship between the US and the Nigerian security forces”.

“The Nigerian government has to do its best to restore public confidence in the security forces, especially the police,” Campbell said.

“There could be financial support to help build up the security forces; there could also be a transfer of technologies.

“If human rights abuses were to go away, the possibility of a deeper relationship is possible.

To abuse of human right is why Buhari aspired to become a president.. Remove fish from the water it will die instantly..

Human right abuse and Buhari are two sides of the same coin..

Nigeria is not only irredeemable, it's a very useless country as well

As if Buhari cares about ending insurgency and human right violation. Does Buhari even understand the rule of law or the meaning of human right?
A demented Military ruler under the garb of democracy who's major life goal is to deliver Nigeria to the hegemony of the Fulanis doesn't care if the whole Nigeria burns for the enthronement of Fulani....and as long as the herds of cattle are also doing well, he is fulfilled

Of course the entire security system.Abuse of human rights is nothing to them.Just read the story of a Real Admiral and his orderly who assaulted some persons because they didn't give them right of way.

Nigerians has lost total respect for our security forces most especially our police force. sighting a police van can be liking to so much anger such as seeing your favorite team losing to a mediocre team.

Way forward their pay should be increased and some special funds be map out for their wellbeing at least they can stop their 50,50 naira collection in our roads although I doubt if they can stop such... undecided

Yes we all know the presidency is so incompetent, but the USA should come in where neccessary as the middle class populace is fast eroding. A refugee problem in Nigeria would affect the world..

Over 5000 new IDP's added to Akwa-ibom and Benue community by the same Nigerian Army and NAF excluding those displaced by the much protected fulani herdsmen.
