Most of what we have about Islam dates between the 9th and 10th centuries - not the 7th century that Mohamed was said to have existed.

For example, it is clear to the discerning that the CHAINS OF NARRATORS were to VALIDATE the CLAIM that people had information passed to them by others who could be traced back to Mohamed. If the information was directly from the time of Mohamed then, obviously, there would be no need to have a LIST OF VALIDATORS dating back to him. This is simple logic that should be clear to anyone.

However, historical records and evidence on the ground show that the religion of Islam DID NOT happen 'overnight'.

The Islamic TRADITIONS which came up in the 9th and 10th centuries (and not the 7th century as Moslems will want us to believe) is what dates the events BACK to the much earlier century.

The THEOLOGY and BIOGRAPHY and SAYINGS did not exist in the 7th century. They did not exist in 22 years nor were they created within the period.

And all of these were too far North of Mecca and much too late in the history of the evolving religion.

The historical records in almost every category just does not support the claim that all of Islam came up during the time of Mohamed.

A claim Moslems make is that memorized Koran is a big deal.

Moslems have absolutely no support in history for the claim that the Koran was preserved in the memory of those who knew Mohamed or were his companions.

There is no reference in Islamic history for such claim. If the memorized Koran was that important or even superior to the written text, why was Abu Bakr forced to have it quickly written down in 632AD? It had to be written down so that it wouldn't be lost!

20 years later, it had to be re-written again! Why? Because those who memorized it had different renditions and so one authoritative text had to be reproduced.

Note, not a recitation, but a written text, which would then be the standard for all Moslems, proving once again that orality just wasn't sufficient.

Coins tell stories
Materials for the 'classical narrative' of Islam does not come from individuals who lived at the same time as Mohamed. Not even in the same century. They come from compilations written down 200 to 300 years later. Going back to the century Mohamed is supposed to have lived helps get a better picture of what actually happened.

But no written thing from that time exists today. Yet coins become a window for us to see the past because the metals used in making them survive tough conditions unlike parchment and paper.

Did the 7th century coins during the time of Mohamed or the time of the 'rightly guided caliphs' show us anything about Mohamed and Islam? The simple truth is NO!

The coins from that century tell us a completely different story.

Coins, minted by the Arabs in the first 40 years the religion was supposed to have started do not have ANY reference to Islam. Caliph Muawiya minted coins that either reflected Christian or Persian Zoroastrian culture.

It is not until 692 AD, that the caliph Abd al-Malik began to issue Islamic coins. That was when Mohamed's name and 'Shahada' appeared on coins. In 696 AD Abd al-Malik removed his own image from the coin, put Arabic script and attacks Jesus's divinity as well as supports Islam's superiority over all other beliefs.

This shows us that while Allah's name is introduced early in the coins from 661 onwards (which makes sense since it was borrowed from the Nabataeans), Mohamed's name is not found anywhere until 692 AD, a good 70 years too late.

All the evidence suggests that Islam really did not exist as we know it today during the time Mohamed is said to have lived, nor for a good 60-70 years after he died, BUT was first introduced by Abd al-Malik in 692 AD.

Doesn't this, therefore, mean that Islam was not introduced or created by Mohamed at all, but was a much later creation by Abd al-Malik?

Coins never lie...

Ibn Hisham 118 alluded to the fact that Islam was not called by that name during the time of Mohamed. When Abu 'Amir asked Mohamed which religion he had brought Mohamed replied "The Hanifiya, the religion of Abraham......". So, according to this report Mohamed claimed to restore the religion of Abraham.

The followers of Mohamed were known as Hanifiyya not Moslems. The change wouldn't come until another 100 years when the name of the religion changed to be Islam and the adherents now called Moslems. When that happened the identity of Hanifiyya and identification as the religion of Abraham were lost. In its place the term Islam meaning SUBMIT was now being used.
