Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was transferred to Minnesota's only maximum-security prison, located in Oak Park Heights, on Tuesday afternoon after he was found guilty on all three charges in the death of George Floyd. Life won't be easy for Chauvin, 45, whose new home is the facility's Administriative Control Unit: He'll spend 23 hours a day in the cell, which only has a bench with a mattress, a toilet-sink hybrid and a shower. Chauvin will get one hour to spend outside the cell to exercise, but he'll be kept away from other prisoners and remain under the watchful eye of prison guards. Guards check-in on prisoners every 30 minutes, and cameras monitor prisoners. The following items are allowed in the unit, according to the Department of Corrections: clothing, footwear, towels, bedding, writing paper and pen, inmate communication forms, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, soap, shampoo, restricted housing information packet, and a comb. These additional items are also allowed "unless prohibited for safety or security reasons:" personal mail, legal materials, wedding rings, approved religious items, shower thongs, address book, eyeglasses, dentures, prosthesis, approved canteen items, ear plugs, and envelopes. Certain magazines, newspapers, publications, books, and education materials may also be approved, as well as radios. Prison officials told The New York Times he's in the unit for his own safety, but according to the Minnesota Department of Corrections website, there are a few reasons why a prisoner ends up there. "The ACU often houses individuals for disciplinary reasons but may also house some individuals who are on Administrative Segregation," the website reads. "This type of restricted housing is not disciplinary in nature. Sometimes it is used during pending investigations or when continued presence in the general population could pose a particular safety concern." Who Are Some Of Its Most Notorious Inmates? The facility, which can house up to 473 inmates, has been home to some of the state’s most dangerous criminals. Minnesota’s “Weepy-Voiced Killer,” Paul Michael Stephani — a serial killer known for his tearful phone calls taunting police in the 1980s — was an inmate there before his death in 1998, the Star Tribune reported. Mark Antonio Profit, a convicted murderer who was believed to be the “Wirth Park Killer,” died from a drug overdose while a prisoner there in 2002. Byron Smith, who killed his teenage cousins on Thanksgiving 2012, also served out his sentences at the prison, news station WCOO reported. Another inmate, Lawrence Scott Dame, was sent there after he was convicted of fatally bludgeoning his sister, her husband, and their three kids as they slept in their home in October 2000, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported. As he was been led away in handcuffs after the judgement; he quickly wrote his lawyers phone number on his palms with a pen. His wife divorced him weeks after he was arrested. Her brother is one of the other three police men charged in the killing of George Floyd. 1 Like

NiklauseFred: As soon a prisoner gets to the prison; everything is taken from him; so he couldnt use paper. When accused people hear guilty; their brain goes into overdrive-the fear of living in prison, any sign of hope is grasped quickly; that number is hope for him. He probably planned to call the lawyer that day to start preparing a statement for the day of sentencing to possibly get the Judges mercy or to start preparing for an appeal. 8 Likes |

Or11: Haa, not likely. He already had a plea last year asking for ten years. The Trump administration turned it down, thinking people would be angry it was too lenient. The cop who killed Walter Scott got 20 years. Very unlikely Chauvn will get less. |

V7place: I read on the BBC website that in the state of Minnesota which is where the crime occurred, the law is usually lenient to first time offenders. Different states in the US have different laws. In some States like Louisiana, he would be facing life imprisonment. 1 Like |
