the society we are in today is failing because the smallest unit of socialisation is failing us.

Shush! The essence of report card is not just about your academic performance in school but also behavioural performance. It was what saved my elder brother when he was a truant in school. When my mum gave him the beating of his life after that report, he changed for good. Today, he is doing well, but most of his mates in the gang aren't. Same report was what improved my handwriting because I had a terrible one and so they were finding it difficult to write my answers and score me. I took third position in that term, and tooķ first the following term when I improved.

Are you kidding me? A teacher wrote "he is a truant" on a child's result? I blame the school Sha.
Truth be told the teacher deserves an outright sack. The problem is not with the owners of the school but the unqualified teachers we use in teaching these days. Having taught for some years now there is a reason why I make it compulsory in my school, the last person to vet the result is the principal's office (the VP included). When such thing is found, you educate the teacher on why he is wrong and ask him to rewrite another result in order to avoid such embarrassment.

If it's about saying the truth, those remarks are okay but if it's about being a teacher and an adult, they're terrible.
The teacher could speak to the student like "see the truth about you, if I wrote this on your report card, would your parents be proud when they see it? Would you be proud in future when you see it?"

Parents with mindsets similar to this yours are the ones breeding the miscreants in the society. The comments are not for employers but for parents and guardians to use to know and guide their wards. I cherish who tells me the truth about myself instead of fake praise singers.

for example.
He is not active in class could be - "He could do with participating more in class"
She keeps gang in the school could be - "I will suggest the company she keeps is vetted" and so on.
He is a truant - " He needs to improve his attendance in class"

My point is we basically said the same thing but my choice of words were chosen carefully. I mentioned where they need to improve on rather than calling them names.

If a student stole the teacher’s handset, the best way to let the parent be aware is through summoning the parents to the school or sending the message to the parents to get them informed. Not through the report card

If any Teacher has any resentment for a student, it is better for the teacher to make a comment on the report card solely on academic performance of the student and leave the personality alone.

You are obviously one of the problems of modern day - refusing to brazenly say the truth as it is just because of whatever form of gratification (relationship, favours, money etc). How are u helping the child if the parents don't get to know the truth?

I am responsible for my younger ones' education, I am particularly about feed backs from their various schools; report cards, face to face engagements with subject tutors, form masters, hostel masters and also comments in their note books. That is how I have an idea of their general behavioural developments and not just academics.

Let me educate your ignorance, the role of rhe school system is not just academics but building excellent characters, there is no way u can build character as a teacher alone, parents need to play their roles. Honest timely feedbacks from the school help the parents. For me I also discuss my wards weaknesses with the school so they could also help them.

Wisdom is profitable to direct. He does not have to lie but just write one positive thing about the child and keep his job. Teachers will only be blamed when majority of the class are getting bad grades. No parent will blame a teacher when the child is in a gang or a truant (when reported).

This is one of the reasons moral decadence is rising in this society of ours. Some teachers don't care for the students under them any longer due to these response from some of the parents and owners of the schools. They even help the students in going astray. The aid them in exam malpractice, extort money from them and even abuse them sexually. The owner of the school is after population so that more money hits their bank account while the children are destroyed.
Tomorrow we hear that the wasted child kill his or her parents and we start wondering why and how could such happen. It begins gradually from this poor foundation of upbringing.
The sacked teacher will get another and better job, God will help him.

And you wait till the end of the term/session to have all these information about your child on the report card?
Then you are a bad parent.

If you do visit your child’s school occasionally and familiar with his/her teacher, you will know all these before the end of the term and make necessary corrections.

If he doesn't have concrete examples to give, then the parents can take it up with him.

If there are concrete examples, the parents and teacher/school work out improvement plans for the next term and assess it's effectiveness at the end of the term.

You cannot simply condemn a teachwr for using the avenue available to him or her to commemt on the academics and conduct of a pupil or student. Report Cards do not only have to carry academic information. They also can carry remakrs on behaviours and consuct in the school.

The best way to resolve a situation like the OP posted if the school does not want such on Report Cards is to create an avenue for documented feedback. Phone calls are not the option because they are not documented properly and anyone can deny. Also getting across by phone to busy parents may not easy.

Telling the teacher to apologize for the procedural lapses of the school is wrong. Most private achools in the bid to keep atusenst and pupils often bend on moral issues and that is very wrong. That is why we have people of questionable character as their products in the society today. A school that cannot discipline students for fear of losing them is not a school but a social tutorial gathering.

If you have worked in a private school you will understand what I mean. In some schools, students must not fail no matter what he or she get you have to pass him/her. In some instances,it is the proprietor that will fill the report cards in order to manipulate the results and make the parents happy so that they will come back next term.
