Chapter 3

Jesus is Baptised
V1 Now John the son of the priest Zechariah went to the wilderness in Judea and telling people to change from their evil ways.
Although Matthew did not tell us when John started this, through the information in Luke we decided it must be about 30 years after the birth of Jesus.
V2 John said the ‘Kingdom of Heaven’ probably because he didn’t want to mention the name of God. It was such a big deal back then.
V3 He gave reference to Prophet Isaiah who said “Someone is screaming in the wilderness, telling people to make a way for the Lord”.
Usually will prepare the road before an important man travels through it. I remember vividly how those times before an election how those dirty road would be swept clean because a president is coming. Isaiah used this to tell the people to prepare their heart for a King who will rule there.
Many people knew they were doing wrong things and came to John to be baptized, hoping in their hearts that God will forgive them among these were the Pharisees and Sadducees*
Baptism then involves dipping oneself in a pool of water. This show that the person has been cleaned from his sins the same water washes our body when we bath.

V11 John speaks about Jesus and what He would do. John knew Jesus was the one he was preparing the way for. Only a slaves carries out petite orders like untying someone’s shoes. John said he was not even good enough be that slave.
John said Jesus will separate bad people from the good ones. And then He would terribly punish the bad people.
V13 In the following verses Jesus who was now a grown man was in Galilee and when from there to visit John.
Matthew told us that John sighted Him and tried stop him. Jesus has no sin, there was absolutely no reason for him to be baptized. But Jesus told him that it was God’s will for Him to be baptized.
V16 Here a voice from heaven said. “This is my Son, He makes me happy”
The spirit bird which was a dove was a sign of peace and power. It also tells us that a new thing is about to start.

///
Pharisees were people who would not accept other cultures and customs, they felt this would stop them from being holy and insisted that people must be careful in obeying God’s law. So they added many extra regulations to assist people in doing this but soon these extra law became a burden to people. The Pharisees didn’t like anyone who doesn’t agree with their beliefs.
While the Sadducees whom I believe are mostly priests believed the 5 book of Moses(Genesis, Exodus ...) were God’s word and that the dead will never ever come alive again. The Sadducees enjoyed power and were willing to lower standards to maintain it.
Finally, Repentance is important in a person life. After we repent we must choose to live in a way that is pleasing to God. Only after this can our repentance be genuine.
John said Jesus will baptize us with the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will give us that power live a pure life. ///

1. You are joking, right? The Pharisees were much like your Pastors and MOgs of today, religious leaders whose primary concern was maintaining the power and control they had over members of the society on whose backsides they built their reputation and wealth. As Jesus Christ warned, they are the thieves who come to steal from God's Sheep using God's name, to kill the lives and minds of people with lies hidden behind their many mentions of the name of God, and to destroy God's flock. The only difference between the Sadducees and the Pharisees amounts to what compares to your denominations of today. undecided

2. Jesus Christ never said the power to live pure comes from the Holy Spirit. Rather, He taught that it is those who through continuous submission and obedience to the teachings and commandments of Jesus Christ, God's Truth, is set free from slavery to sin by God's Truth and are then transformed into Sons of God, Holy(pure) and acceptable vessels to then be inhabited by the Spirit of God - John 8 vs 31 - 36 & John 14 vs 15 - 23. You cannot have the Holy Spirit unless you first become holy. "Be ye holy for my Father in Heaven is Holy,", that commandment was given to you by Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ did not give the commandment to the Holy Spirit. undecided
