President Muhammadu Buhari-led government says kidnapping and banditry are not federal offences in Nigeria.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Information Minister, Lai Mohammed made the comment in response to the statement on insecurity by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

“It is shocking that a party that ruled this nation for all of 16 years does not know that kidnapping and banditry are not federal offences”, he said.

The minister told the party to call out the states, including those being controlled by it, to ensure a rigorous prosecution of arrested kidnappers and bandits.

Mohammed said the PDP did not respect its own words, as it played cheap politics while playing the ostrich.

He noted that the opposition made wild accusations against the President and his government.

“For example, the PDP said the government has refused to engage, and that we were running a ‘government of exclusion’, and not engaging stakeholders.”

Mohammed insisted that the current administration has consistently engaged Nigerians on topical national issues, including security, the fight against corruption, terrorism, infrastructure and farmer-herder conflict.

He said the latest of such Town Hall Meetings was the one in Kaduna and further listed the recommendations.

The minister said participants agreed: That the governance of human society should be based on Law rather than the whims and caprices of human beings and must be obeyed by all as all persons are equal before the law including the lawgivers;

That there is an urgent need for political restructuring and not separation; That the Judiciary be decentralized and reformed through Constitutional Amendment to remove the unitary control of the Superior Courts;

That governments at all levels should ensure free, qualitative and compulsory Primary Education for all children of school age;

That the Military, Police and other Security Agencies should be expanded in number, retrained, provided with modern equipment and technology to cope with emerging security challenges.

That both religious and traditional leaders should encourage and promote inter-marriages for unity as contained in the 1999 Constitution as amended, Article 15, 3(c) which prescribes inter-marriage among persons from different places of origin, or of different religious, ethnic or linguistic association or ties;

That the establishment of State Police should be supported by the National and State Houses of Assembly to enable State Governments to have firm control in addressing security issues.

That Traditional Rulers should be given their age-long role of maintaining peace and security within their domain;

The Local Government Autonomy be actualized to enable them to have control of their areas including the ungoverned spaces in tackling security challenges;

That the Farmers/Herders clashes be addressed by establishment of ranches, grazing reserves with modern amenities to check the trans-humans of the herders.

If banditry and kidnapping which oftentimes, result to the killing of innocent people are not federal offences, what qualifies as a federal offence?

Sometimes I wonder how dese people reason. After sniffing cow dung, they come on a public space and talk rubbish.

From the so-called educated ones that only learnt how to read and write english to the ones pushing cows, all reason d same backward way.

Goodness me... These are the illiterate things holding important positions in the govt nd ruling sane and well educated ppl. Tufia!

Of course you and your slave master in Aso Rock have made sure that banditry and kidnapping will never become federal offenses so that you can get away with your atrocities/islamisation agenda while at the same time blaming state governors for failing to do anything about the banditry and kidnapping.

Well spoken like the typically stupid son of misfortune that you are in addition to being the mouthpiece of the clueless, useless, lifeless and brainless Criminal In Chief from Daura. Your master must be very proud of his bingo dog

It is not even in the constitution to attack bandits and kidnappers.... What our constitution stipulates is...we should dialogue with bandits and kidnappers on how to best go about their business and how much ransom to be paid per each state monthly for peace to reign...

It is not a federal offense except when it is happening in areas of the country where known rebels exist. In that case it is treason and operation Python dance will have to be implemented.

shocked shocked shocked shocked It is finished.So why have the government been lying as usual that they are fighting kidnapping bandits and terrorists holding this nation to ransome? Why is Evans being prosecuted by the court and police if kidnapping is not a crime with the FG? Who do they think they are deceiving?

So banditry and kidnapping are not federal offenses yet those seeking for self independence are terrorists? Meaning bandits, kidnapper as well as Fulani/BH terrorists are not criminals? God why did you joined me with these imbeciles?

No wonder these atrocious or criminal elements are having a free reign across Nigeria.Brace up people. You're being ruled by terrorists.Time to go our separate ways.
