We’re in the golden age of content.
Content is effective at advancing career and business because it’s easy to get started. You don’t need expensive overhead.
Most content requires just a computer or smartphone.
Digital media have zero marginal cost of reproduction.
Content creators can “build once” and distribute to millions of people without any extra effort. Creating content helps you sell your creativity online and make a living doing so.
Creating content has its own difficulty.
It takes time, iteration, and tinkering to find something that works. There’s a simple solution:
How to get started fast creating content
The easiest way to start creating content online is to become a content curator.
A content curator takes existing content, organizes it, and then publishes it to build an audience. There’s so much content online. It’s hard for the average consumer to keep up with everything happening in their niche.
Curators make information accessible to the average content consumer.
Content curating ideas to get you started
Curated newsfeed: Find the best sources of news in a particular niche. Filter only the best for others.
Expert directories: Create a list of top experts in a field for people to follow.
Curated video channel: Collect the best videos on a topic. Share them on a YouTube channel. Add your commentary on why you think the videos are good.
Slideshows: Create a slide presentation of the best examples or models. Upload it on a site like Slideshare.
Learning curriculum: Make a curriculum of the best sources of learning for a particular field. Add commentary on how people should use them and in what order.
Review videos: Make videos reviewing works or products in your niche.
Event guides: Make a calendar or directory of the best events
Starting point: Share a list of the most important or interesting jump off points in your field to help newcomers orient to the current landscape.
Galleries: Publish a collection of the best images you’ve seen, along with links to their creator’s page.
How to monetize your curated content
You can monetize your curated content in different ways:
-Create a PDF and sell it on Gumroad
-Start a blog on WebFlow and charge for articles using Memberful
-Publish work for free and take donations using Buy me a Coffee
-Publish a course on Teachable and charge for access
-Create a paid email newsletter using Substack
-Setup an online forum using Discourse and charge for access
While curation isn’t easy, it’s far easier than creating content.
Once you’ve built the habit of shipping content consistently, you’ll naturally move into creating ‘original content’. Start curating content that interests you. Be a lighthouse for likeminded people. Experiment and Tinker.
Start building your audience.
