Bose Ogulu, mother of Nigerian musician Burna Boy, has debunked claims that her son received money to attend a reception with Rivers state governor, Nyesom Wike, back in March.

In a recent interview with popular TV host, Ebuka Obi-Uchendu, Bose said Burna was rather honoured because of what he achieved and it would have been disrespectful to turn down such honour from his place of origin. Recall that Burna Boy was hosted by Wike after his success at the 63rd Grammy Awards.

He became the first solo act in Nigeria to win a Grammy award when he beat Antibalas, Bebel Gilberto, Anoushka Shankar, and Tinariwen to the Best Global Music Album award. According to unconfirmed reports, the 29-year-old was reportedly gifted a plot of land as well as funds to develop the land by Wike.

Nigerians did not disappoint, slating the African Giant mastermind for accommodating such gestures from a politician, made worse by the ongoing political crises in the Nation. However, it’s a good thing his mother, and part-time manager, Bose Ogulu is clearing the air on the incident.

Ogulu is a daughter of the music critic Benson Idonije, who was the manager of Fela Kuti, the late Afrobeat legend. With a Bachelor of Arts in foreign languages and a Masters of Arts in translation from the University of Port Harcourt, she had a successful career as a translator for the Federation of West African Chambers of Commerce. She is the founder of Spaceship Collective, the holding company to Spaceship Records and Spaceship Publishing.
