Alexander Sapara Williams was Nigeria's first lawyer to qualify as an advocate. His push for press freedom and opposition to the Seditious Offences Ordinances of 1909 became the growth platform for Herbert Macaulay and other nationalist leaders.
Also, Williams was one of the two Nigerians who made it into the new legislative council following the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Nigerian protectorates.
