Is the contractor certified? .... on what grounds was he awarded the contract? ... who awarded him the contract?....what buildings are in his resume?.... was the work being inspected?... who are the inspectors that approved the work to this stage? If these are not addressed then buildings collapsing will never end.

A two-storey modern Accident and Emergency building under construction at Federal Medical Centre, FMC Umuahia Abia State has collapsed, ABN TV reports.

The building ABN TV gathered collapsed at about 1am on Thursday.

Our correspondent learnt that no human casualty was recorded.

Speaking with newsmen on the development Thursday, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, Prof. Azubuike Onyebuchi expressed gratitude to God that no life was lost at the incident.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkJHGPZyQO8
He however expressed sadness that at a time when there is a growing economic crisis in the country, such a loss is incurred, maintaining that lean available resources does not accommodate for waste of resources.

According to Prof. Onyebuchi, the contractor handling the modern Accident and Emergency building has not executed similar project in the hospital before.

The project awarded in 2019 was at the plastering stage when the unfortunate incident happened.

He said he is not in a position to give information on the cause of the building collapse, adding that the consultant and the contractor will make available such information subsequently.

The affected area has since been cordoned off.

"I have a mixed feeling to it. I thank God no life was lost. We have scarce resources in the country at the moment. We should be having value for money.

"So if anything like this has happened, I feel sad that the scarce resources that we have is going this way.

"We are looking at it. It just happened. We are going to have several meetings on this and find out what has gone wrong so that we can prevent that from happening again. We have learnt a lesson from that.

"The building is still under construction and has not been handed over to us. So it's still with the people handling it. Assuming it was handed over to us, then the patients and staff are there, then it collapses and kill people. I thank God no life was lost. We will see and get to the bottom of what has happened" he said.

The contractor and supervisor were yet to arrive the scene of the building collapse as at the moment of this report.

Substandard materials .... Poor Engineer had to manage to do something, as the amount budgeted for the building has been looted into private pockets..from various approval stages....

Irrespective of the above...The Engr. Is incompetent.. because, if he is competent enough, he will back out honourably and not embark on building with substandard materials because of paucity of funds.

Sub-standard materials used.

Imagine project awarded 2019 when the bag of cement is between the range of N1900-N2500 and what is the price today among many other factors.

Thank God no life was lost.

Sub-standard products and cutting corners is the way of life of some people. Wonder what will be exported in their beloved country if it happens.

If this had been completed,
Accident and Emergency building collapsing on patients that are there for emergency?
Oh No!
The contractor should answer to this. Is he using substandard products or cutting corners to maximise gains?

I hope no life was lost

Why won’t the building fall when the MD will refuse to approve the use of standard products for the hospital. You don’t have any idea of the civil engineering works but you have already collected some percentage of the contract sum before the job starts. Go to their Lab it is the same issue there, use of substandard products for running of tests and thereby risking the life of patients. This man should be taken out of there he doesn’t have the managerial skills to run a hospital, greed wouldn’t let him. You come to a government hospital and you find out that almost 100% of the building contracts and supplies are done by him either with his numerous registered companies or with those he must have collected some percentage of the contract sum from, why wouldn’t the contractor try to squeeze out some profit for himself. A medical doctor that rants like an animal. Investigations should be made at that hospital, all contracts awarded in that hospital should be investigated and reviewed. Code of Conduct Bureau and EFCC should look into this man there is more to be discovered of his activities as an MD in that hospital. This man needs to be Unseated!!!
