As the process of amending the 1999 Constitution is ongoing, the Ondo State Governor, Rotimi Akeredolu, has called for a unicameral legislature for the country.

Specifically, the governor said the upper chamber of the National Assembly should be scrapped while the Assembly should be on part-time basis to reduce the cost of governance.

Akeredolu stated this at the Akure Centre of the South-West Zonal Public Hearing on the review constitution, held at the International Cultural and Event Center, Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday.

Represented by his deputy, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, the governor said the position of the state was for the Federal Government to be reduced in weight and responsibilities.

He said, “The position of the Ondo State Government has been made public. We advocate for a Federal Government largely reduced in size and scope of engagement. We want to see a Constitution that will enhance the performance of public office holders at all levels.

“It is possible to have a government that will serve the people in deed and truth. The law of the land must aid this realistic expectation. We must reduce the cost of governance and shift attention to service delivery in this trying period.”

He added, “The country may consider dropping the current bicameral structure of the National Assembly and adopt a unicameral legislature. The membership of the Assembly should be part time. No member should earn allowances not known to the Revenue Mobilisation and Allocation Committee and, more importantly, people they claim to serve.

“Legislators should earn under a uniform salary structure. Allowance peculiarities must not be about obscenity. The Senate should be scrapped. The House of Representatives too should not be unwieldly. A maximum of four representatives should come from each zone.”

He mentioned the position of the state to include, creation of state police, devolution of powers, state control of resources, decentralization of supreme court among others.

This is very nice. Some people can not be milking this country all in the name of claiming to be representing the masses whereas they are only representing themselves. Only numbers, no meaningful impact from them.

shocked

Wise man

The senate should be scrapped by 2030 when I have been a senator and collected my own share of national cake.

By the way the following law should be looked in to...
The law that allow north to have Shari'a police.
The law that allow north to ban alcohol and yet collecting taxes paid by beer companies.
The law that allows north to partake in oil money from South but bars South from collecting money from Zamfara gold sales
The law that allows Radio and TV stations to interview Miyyeti Allow president but bans them from granting interview to IPOB spokesperson (Emma Powerful.
The law that allows Northern governors to send almajiris that are from their States back to home States but bars southern governors from doing same.

Most important, the law that allows a 4th candidate in election contest to be declared a Governor

Everything about 1999 constitution is a fraud! Big fraud!.…… Let me use my resources to develop my land. Enough of the parasitic relationship. Lagos generates trillions of naira monthly but how much comes back to them? Same goes for other states. We need better life for our children. End this fraudulent constitution.

This so called constitution review charade is just an empty ploy to distract the people from separation from Nigeria. We refuse to be fooled.

If they truly wish to review that poor 1999 constitution, they would have done it long ago. Not now that we are about to exit Nigeria. They don't care about any constitution. The northern jihadists are just attempting one of the many nefarious tricks in their wickedness.

Ko le work.

Constitution review too late.

Oodua Republic, here we come.

Many political offices should be scrapped. We do not have viable institutions in this country. It's all about the personnel in power, not the institution.

The senate will never perform because as an institution, it lacks credibility. It's a rubber-stamp senate. It's not checkmating anything.

How can a constitutional review bring any substantial good when the majority of lawmakers are purposefully from one part of the country ?
