Twitter Escaped Accountability For Long, Presidency Defends Ban

The Presidency has defended the ban on Twitter, saying the company escaped accountability “for a while”.

In a statement on Saturday, Malam Garba Shehu, Presidential spokesman, said the Buhari administration will not allow tech companies tear Nigeria apart.

He debunked the allegation that the Federal Government moved against Twitter because it yanked off President Muhammadu Buhari’s tweet on Civil War.

“The temporary suspension of Twitter is not just a response to the removal of the President’s post. There has been a litany of problems with the social media platform in Nigeria, where misinformation and fake news spread through it have had real world violent consequences. All the while, the company has escaped accountability.”

“Nevertheless, the removal of President Buhari’s tweet was disappointing. The censoring seemed based on a misunderstanding of the challenges Nigeria faces today.

“The President in his address at the United Nations General Assembly, UNGA in 2019 said “the world was shocked and startled by the massacre in New Zealand by a lone gunman taking the lives of 50 worshippers.”

“This and similar crimes which have been fueled by social media networks risk seeping into the fabric of an emerging digital culture.

“Major tech companies must be alive to their responsibilities. They cannot be allowed to continue to facilitate the spread of religious, racist, xenophobic and false messages capable of inciting whole communities against each other, leading to loss of many lives. This could tear some countries apart.

“President Buhari has therefore been warning against social media’s disruptive and divisive influences and the government’s action is not a knee-jerk reaction to Twitter’s preposterous deletion of his tweet which should have been read in full.”

Feel so proud and happy to be a Nigerian

#FG and #NGPOWER banned Twitter and one day later, heaven did not fall and Twitter is making amends, deleting terrorist and destructive anti-Nigerian tweets off its platform.

Respect us as a nation and stop promoting violence, terrorist activities and the destruction of Nigeria.

God Bless Nigeria.

Where is that coming from

This is the most corrupt govt we ever had, that can not account for generated funds, loans and looted funds. This govt does not understand anything about accountability.

Let's not deceive ourselves, Twitter deserves the ban. What they did they can't try with America and get away it.

My only issue is Buhari is not fit to be the one to ban Twitter. And the fact that the ban came just after Twitter deleted Buhari's tweet shows their motive isn't right.

Twitter is wrong allowing Nmadi Kanu and other terrorists use their platform against a country but Buhari acting so swiftly shows we are in for it.

The Arrow ( can't believe me a staunch fan of his could say this ) could have acted this swiftly on many issues but refused but could add on something as mundane as Twitter.

722 days more to this sick maladministration but can we say with the stupidity of Buhari Nigeria will still be in existence by then?

They couldn't conceal the "painment", what Jack and his boys did truly got to them ooo. Anyway Shehu said Twitter has been causing real life violence and abduction like the Kankara boys abduction and even the Ondo abduction that happened days ago. Twitter has a way of jeopardizing our very 23 century security architecture. Lol. Bunch of ciowns

Many Buhari supporters still check their Twitter using VPN after ranting here.
The reality is that finally the world has taken note of the planned genocide against the South East currently happening in Benue state, kudos to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Buhari in his bitterness through that 'fortunate' Twit exposed the ethnic agenda of his kinsmen, moving soldiers from the frontlines in the North East many of them suffering from PTSD as a result of war scar to the SE under the guise of 'restoring peace' is wicked.

What is this one saying?
Are you proud of the destruction of lives and livelihood of the poor by government policies since Buhari came into power, the continuous CBN policies that have destroyed the naira and impoverished Nigerian salary-earners and businessmen and women?

Or the continual dilapidation of our educational institutions and standards for the upcoming generations, with no end in sight to strikes and shutdowns?

Or you are also proud that your country Nigeria by this Twitter ban has sent a stronger message to foreign investors never to come here since every court will align with the interest of the federal government, without any hope that they will get a fair hearing or be treated well? Even the almighty Shoprite SA got tired recently and left.

Or it is the pride of tormenting and frustrating the efforts of young people to sanitize this country of corrupt leaders and get Nigeria working again through freedom of speech and access to platforms that allow dialogue and expression of their fundamental human rights?

You are proud of failure and you know it. This government is the most oppressive and tyrannic government Nigerians have ever known. You should be ashamed not proud.

The ban was necessary for the growth of our nation. That platform was mainly used by IPOB miscreants to spread propaganda and cause mass hysteria in our darling nation. All that is history now. The Federal government made the right decision.
