1. Why Greece

A. Location

Greece is a country located in the northern region of Europe.

To a non-EU resident, It is a gateway to visit other countries in the Schengen Area.


B. Weather

Greece is a European country that has a Mediterranean type of weather.

This means that the temperature varies from 5 deg minimum to 34 deg maximum.

The sun is always shining but not as hot as the one here in Africa and definitely not as cold during winter as in western Europe.

Practically, umbrella and water-coat are called upon a few times every year.


C. Landscapes

Greece is home to beautiful islands, beaches, mountains and other geographical fantasies.


D. Food

Greece has an abundance of healthy foods which parades unique taste.

It is not spicy but is loaded with natural food spices and vegetables.

The country also has a wealth of olive oil, a healthy food supplement whose value cannot be underestimated.

Note that Greek cafes give free dessert and “Raki”, a vodka liquor produced from grapes.


E. Cost of Living

The cost of living in Greece is estimated to be around 500 to 800 Euros per month.

It is one of the cheapest places to live in Europe and for students, the price can be as low as between 300 to 400 euros.


F. People and culture

Greek people are very friendly and easy to get along with.

They are proud of their long-existing culture and children are more connected to their parents. Even at 18 (years) beyond, they still have their parents support.

Gay marriage is abhorred and it's very easy to evade taxes.


2. The University of Loanina At a Glance

The University of Ioannina is a public higher education institution that was originally founded in 1964.

It became a full-fledged university in 1970 after pulling away from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, AUTH.

This non-profit organisation is situated 5 km southwest of Ioannina, Greece.


3. Ranking

The university of loanina is the 712th best university in the world. It is among the top 5 universities in Greece and has employed more than 1000 of its alumni.

The university has scores of 671, 808, 541 and 71.8% for quality publications, influence rank, citations and overall Score respectively.

5. Students support:

Feeding: The University of loanina offers free meals to its students, for both undergraduate and postgraduate scholars.

The school's eatery opens from 1 September to 30 June, Monday-Sunday.

It shuts down every 14 days of Christmas and Easter festivities and feeds a maximum of 4,000 students per day.

The cafe operates for a total number of 275 days a year and meals are available via
breakfast, lunch and dinner route.


Accommodation: The university owns Residence Halls on campus. Buildings owned by the National Youth Foundation are also available to students.

Low-income students are eligible to live for free in these rooms


Housing Allowance: This is only given to undergraduate scholars and TEI students in Greece.

This requires an application and some supporting documents.


Scholarships: These are available to students of the following calibre:

1. Top first-year students in any department with the highest grades.

2. Students, with a high average grade in an academic session.

3. Scholars, with the highest final grade during a session.


Student ID Card: This is non-applicable for graduates of other Universities but eligible undergraduate receives the following discounts:

1. 25% off the fee of city public transport anywhere in Greece.

2. 25% off the expense of the intercity coach service anywhere in Greece.

3. 25% off the price of rail transport anywhere in Greece.

4. 25% off the cost of the full fee of domestic group (minimum of 15 people) flights via Olympic Airlines.


6. Cost of Studying

The university of loanina does not charge any tuition fee for undergraduate and postgraduate study programs.

This applies to all Greek, Erasmus and international students.


7. Language requirement

Admitted students at University must possess a Greek language certificate.

This is gotten after successful language exams. The examinations are held twice a year.

That is, around June and September in ATHENS, at the Modern Greek Language Centre of the University Campus in Zografou also, in June and October in THESSALONIKI, at Modern Greek
Language Centre of the University of Thessaloniki.

9. Final Words

Studying in Europe requires lots of funds that some scholars easily give up on the chase.

The university of loanina offers the perfect chance to study in one of Europe's best countries for free.

Greece is the birthplace of modernization, westernization, education and democracy.

The primary requirement to achieve this educational goal is to apply, get admitted and pass the Greek language exam.
