As Nigeria marked its Democracy Day today, June 12, 2021, a pro-Buhari group held a rally in Abuja to support what they described as progressive steps taken to restore Nigeria from failing.

The rally which was held to show solidarity for the current administration was organized by the Youth Coalition for Development, (YCD) and had participants carrying banners and placards with the hashtag, #IStandwithBuhari.

Convener of the rally, Comrade Aminu Aminu, said the decision by President Muhammadu Buhari to make June 12 the recognized Democracy Day in Nigeria is a historic one and in the best interest of the nation.

He stated that it was gratifying to note that President Buhari recognized the strident struggles of pro-democracy campaigners and did not allow such to go in vain.

According to him, “June 12 is a watershed in the annals of Nigeria’s democratic history. It is a day to celebrate the beginning of a consistent and ideological struggle that eventually birth a foundation for the democratic renaissance that Nigeria is now building,” he said.

Aminu, while commending the Buhari-led administration for giving June 12 the significance it deserves, said the president “will continue to enjoy the respect and veneration of all lovers of democracy.”

“After 26 years of advocacy and clamor, President Muhammadu Buhari courageously gave this day the significance it deserves, and for this, he would continue to enjoy the veneration and respect of all lovers of democracy”, he stated.

For his part, one of the Organizers, Martins Igwe, noted that “the worst of democracy is the best of the military”.

While describing the rally as a celebration of democracy, he pointed out that those criticizing the current administration should understand that Buhari is doing his best and democracy is a gradual process.

Similarly, Nabila Yusuf Ahmad described the Democracy Day as a special day that Nigerians shouldn't take for granted explaining that Nigeria's democracy came at a time where none thought it could be a reality going by the dominion nature of the Military at that time.

Also, she prayed Buhari to play his role and ensure a sustained democracy in the country as she applauds him for his infrastructural developments and commitment to youth-related welfare through the initiation and execution of youth-related programs and policies within the country.
