Based on a recent sociological research:
It is really true that Nigerians hate Thieves (even non violent ones) more than they hate killers. Note that the thieves in perspective are the ones that steal without killing. However if you look more closely, WHO IS DOING MORE DAMAGE? The THIEF or the KILLER? A Thief that steals can return the item he/she has stolen, but a person who is killed cannot be returned back from dead. But why does the average Nigerian sad have more hatred for a (non violent) Thief than they have for a person or for Folks that snuff life violently? It could be due to the immediate psychological effects stealing has on it's victim compared to the effect a person who has a close brush with death has. An NDE leaves it's survivor feeling grateful for escaping alive, while being robbed non violently even leaves you feeling bad and silly, like you're 100% to be blamed for the theft. So when next you get robbed non violently, have it at the back of your mind that it's nothing compared to being killed.
Take note that this doesn't in anyway insinuate that stealing isn't a crime that's punishable by law. It is a crime that can land you in jail for a decade.
Also the rampant stealing and looting of public funds by political elites whom the people look up to for examplary leadership makes the sight of a petty thief in the marketplace almost hard to tolerate or bear.
